Ryan is a fictional character from the Saw franchise as well as a supporting character in Saw 3D. He was portrayed by Jon Cor.

Biography

early life

Ryan was a young man and the boyfriend of Dina. For her, he committed various crimes in order to impress her and fulfill her material needs. Dina however was cheating on him and had a relationship with his rival, Brad, at the same time. Due to his crimes and his role in the love triangle, he was eventually targeted by Detective Mark Hoffman, the successor of the late John Kramer, better known as the Jigsaw Killer. (Saw 3D)

Ryan wakes up in the trap

One day, he was subdued, abducted and taken to the Welthammer Store, a home improvement market. Upon waking up, he was shocked to see that his hands were chained to a contraption, consisting of three circular saw blades, in the middle of the store. To his surprise, Brad was chained to the same contraption. As they started to panic, Ryan yelled at the crowd outside the shopwindow and begged them to help them. Seconds later, a black cloth was pulled away from a large metal plate suspended from the ceiling above them, revealing Dina, who was chained to the plate and immediately screamed for help. Brad then yelled at the people outside to call the police. As he saw that a woman in the crowd had a briefcase, he frantically told her to use it to smash the glass. However, despite her repeated attempts she was unable to break the window. Seconds later, a mechanical ventriloquist puppet approached on a tricycle and introduced them to a deadly game. The puppet told them that they were chosen because of their crimes they committed in Dina's name and informed them, that one of them had to die within the next 60 seconds. In order to save Dina, either Brad or Ryan had to push the saws before them all the way to the other side, thereby inevitably killing one of them. If none of them managed to do this in time, Dina would be killed by the third saw blade.

Moments later, the timer began to count down and the blades started rotating. Therefore, Ryan immediately pushed the saws away towards the shocked Brad. Brad however fought back and shoved the saws towards Ryan. As he seemingly gained the upperhand, Dina told him that she loved him, which he reciprocated, and encouraged him to kill Ryan, much to the latter's dismay. However, when he tried to deal the death blow to Ryan, he fought back once more, causing one of the saws to vertically slice Brad's chest while he screamed in agony. Afterwards, Ryan confronted Dina, who claimed that she only loved him and had merely told Brad that she loved him as it was the only way for her to save herself. Ryan however was furious and when Dina yelled at him to kill Brad, he pulled the saws away from him. Seeing that Dina had played with both of them, Ryan told Brad that she wasn't worth either of their lives and thereby convinced him to sacrifice Dina in order to save themselves. Dina, who was shocked by this, angrily yelled at them. Moments later, the timer went off and Dina was lowered down, causing the third saw to slowly cut her stomach. Thereby, Brad and Ryan were covered in her blood until the saws finally came to a standstill after slicing Dina's body. (Saw 3D)

The police finally arrived immediately afterwards and freed both, Brad and Ryan, from their shackles. Following the events, the men concluded peace and both joined a self-help group of Jigsaw survivors who met in a local church. Therefore, they were also present when Bobby Dagen, another supposed Jigsaw survivor, who had earned much fame and wealth by publishing his story of surviving one of Jigsaw's traps, told them about his own experience and encouraged them not to feel ashamed for what they had gone through. After Bobby's dramatic speech, another survivor, Dr. Lawrence Gordon, stood up and sarcastically mocked him and his "remarkable" ability to get something positive out of his horrifying experiences. Bobby however tried to act confident and thanked him. Therefore, Gordon and the other confused members of the group applauded him, showing their gratefulness of being part of his story. (Saw 3D)

Personality

Not much can be said about Ryan's personality due to his short screen time. However, the fact that he committed crimes for the sake of impressing Dina and winning her affections suggest that he was a rather susceptible individual, but as it was him who decided to sacrifice Dina in the first place, it seems that he wasn't as deluded by her as Brad.

Ryan has shown a cynical sense of humor, as he claimed just before killed her "I think we're breaking up with you, Dina!".

Trivia

• In an earlier version of the script, Ryan was supposed to die in the Public Execution Trap, so Brad could save Dina.
• According to the audio commentary of Saw 3D, Ryan and Brad were supposed to be the two pig-masked men who assisted Dr. Gordon in the abduction of Mark Hoffman at the end of the film.
• It was originally reported that Jon Cor would be reprising his role as Ryan and was spotted on the set of Jigsaw sharing scenes with Tobin Bell. However, in the finished film, the character didn't appear, though interestingly, another character with the same name was included.
