Traps
From Saw Movies
One of the main focuses of the Saw film series are the traps that the characters Jigsaw and his apprentices, Amanda and Hoffman, create for their victims. In the movies, Jigsaw places individuals into traps for having wasted or misused their lives; each trap serving the purpose of testing the victim's will to live. As such, these devices force subjects into near-death situations in which they are typically given the opportunity to either save themselves or die. In accordance to Jigsaw's ideology, the traps act as a form of immediate rehabilitation for the subject upon completion and supposedly reward the survivors with a new lease on life (that is if the subject doesn't fail and die, which is usually the case).
These traps, also called games or tests, come in two forms. The first are traps based around devices applied to the victim, usually with the effect of causing serious bodily harm or death if they are not removed by the end of specified time. The others involve a rigged area from which the victim has to escape, which are often based around interactions with other people. In both cases, they are created for people Jigsaw deems unappreciative of their lives, and are designed to ironically reflect the problems of the characters, with a few exceptions, including the Quadruple Shotgun and The Electrified Staircase, which are used by Jigsaw for security and protection, the Drill Chair Trap, in which Jigsaw used the victim as an experiment, the Magnum Eyehole, and Jeff's Trials in Saw III, in which the traps are not based on the victims. Often times, the victim must perform dangerous tasks, mutilate themselves, or harm others to escape.
The victims are usually informed about the traps by use of a recorded video or cassette tape, which either plays automatically once they awaken, or when they start the recording themselves. The video recordings tend to show Billy the Jigsaw Puppet giving the directions. On other occasions, however, Jigsaw gives the directions to the trap in person, while in security traps, little or no warning is given. While most of the traps have solutions to them, with the exception of Amanda Young's inescapable traps and Mark Hoffman's Pendulum Trap, few characters have survived them.

[edit] Saw
Most of the first movie played out in a bathroom, the setting of one of Jigsaw's more complicated tests. However, a lot more of Jigsaw's creations were viewed at his lair, which was located in an old abandoned mannequin factory on Stygian street. Detectives David Tapp and Steven Sing arrived there after following clues hidden on one of the video tapes played for one of Jigsaw's victims. After arriving at the factory, Tapp and Sing found everything shrouded in red blankets. Removing them, they found numerous things hidden beneath them, including the puppet Billy, a diorama of the bathroom trap, and an experimental victim. After pursuing Jigsaw down a hallway, Sing fell victim to another hidden trap, getting shot from above. The majority of the traps and tests seen in the movie are as follows:
[edit] The Razorwire Maze
This trap involved a victim who woke up partially-naked inside a fenced-in area of a basement. Between the victim and the door, there was a gauntlet of densely strung together razor wire that the victim had to navigate in order to find an exit. There was a hole cut somewhere at the end of the fence, but it was in a place where the victim was not likely to look. The door out of the basement was set on a timer and the victim had to escape before the timer went off. Paul Leahy was the victim for this trap. He was a man with a decent life, yet he decided to slit his wrists, presumably for attention. According to Jigsaw, the irony of his situation was that if he really wanted to die, he just had to stay where he was (since the door to freedom would close, trapping him in). But if he wanted to live, he would have to "cut himself again." Footage from the movie shows him pushing his way through the wire, and making it to the end, but not finding the hole in time, therefore being trapped in the basement "forever." Detectives found him hanging dead on the razor wires. He was cut so deep that detectives found traces of stomach acid on the floor.
Tape: Hello, Paul. You're a perfectly healthy, sane, middle-class male. Yet, last month, you ran a straight razor across your wrists. Did you cut yourself because you truly wanted to die, or did you just want some attention? Tonight you'll show me. The irony is that if you want to die, you just have to stay where you are. But if you want to live, you'll have to cut yourself again. Find the path through the razor wire to the door. But hurry, at 3:00 that door will lock and then this room becomes your tomb. How much blood will you shed to stay alive, Paul?
[edit] The Flammable Jelly
Mark Wilson, who committed worker's comp fraud, was tested on his so-called "illness," and was stripped of his clothes and covered in a flammable jelly. He was in a dark room with broken glass completely covering the floor (he was barefoot), hundreds of numbers written on the walls, and a safe in the middle of the floor. He was also supplied with a lit candle. Via a recording, Mark was told that there was a slow-acting poison in his system and he had about two hours to find the correct combination and take the antidote for the poison which was stored inside the safe. The combination could be found among the walls. While looking at the walls however, he drew too close to the candle and went up in flames. His scorched body was shown afterward. Detectives also found a peephole engraved in the wall, showing that Jigsaw liked to "book himself front row seats to his own sick little games."
Tape: Hello Mark, if you're so sick, then why do I have so many photos of you up and about? Let's put your so called illness to the test. Right now, there is a slow acting poison in your veins. The antidote is inside the safe. The combination to the safe is written on the walls. Hurry up and program it in, but watch your step. And by the way, that is a flammable substance smeared on your body. So I would be careful with that candle if I were you, or all the people you've burned with your act just might have their revenge.
[edit] The Reverse Beartrap
Main Article: Reverse BeartrapThis trap was used on a heroin addict named Amanda Young, whose wrists were bound with duct tape to armrests on a chair in a dark room with a heavy metal apparatus hooked into her upper and lower jaw. The Jigsaw Puppet appeared on the TV screen and revealed that Amanda had a short amount of time to get the trap off of her head before it would snap open like a reverse bear trap, which would rip her jaws wide open in the process. To emphasize the point, a demonstration was shown to Amanda, who watched as the device went off on a mannequin head, which exploded as the device opened. The puppet told her that the key that she needed to remove the device was in the stomach of the "dead" Donnie Greco lying across the room from her.
As the tape ended, Amanda was forced to wriggle her arms free from the duct tape, at which point she stood up, pulling and snapping a trigger wire that set off the one-minute timer on the back of the contraption on her head. She quickly raced over to Donnie, whereupon she had to cut into his stomach and retrieve the key, although it was revealed that he was not actually dead as the tape had suggested, but in an opiate-induced state of paralysis, unable to feel pain. He began stirring and eventually woke up as Amanda cut into his stomach with a scalpel and retrieved the key. Amanda managed to remove the device just in time, grabbing it from her head and tossing it to the floor as it snapped open.
Original Idea: The Reverse Beartrap was used in the original Saw short film, attached to a character named David. The scenario played out the same as the later version, with David escaping from the contraption seconds before it went off.
Tape: Hello, Amanda. You don't know me but I know you. I want to play a game. Here's what happens if you lose. The device you're wearing is hooked into your upper and lower jaws. When the timer at the back goes off, your mouth will be permanently ripped open. Think of it like a reverse bear trap. Here, I'll show you. There is only one key to open the device. It's in the stomach of your dead cellmate. Look around, Amanda; know that I'm not lying. Better hurry up. Live or die, make your choice.
Second Tape: Congratulations! You are still alive. Most people are so ungrateful to be alive, but not you, not anymore.
[edit] The Drill Chair
This trap involved two power drills attached to the sides of a chair. As the time pressed on, the drills moved closer to the victim's head, which was held steady by a metal neck brace. In this case, a man named Jeff Ridenhour was shackled in, and the trap was activated when Jigsaw stepped on a button to distract a pair of detectives from arresting him. Inside a box connected to the chair was a key ring with countless keys. Detective Sing did not know which one was the one needed to unlock the neck brace, and instead shot the drills, deactivating them moments before they reached Jeff's head.
Jigsaw's words to Jeff: Awake already, Jeff? I need more powerful tranquilizers next time. Don't cry. I've given your life a purpose. You're a test subject for something greater than yourself--
[edit] The Quadruple Shotgun Hallway
This trap was used by Jigsaw for security reasons instead of having a test for the victim. It involved four double-barreled shotguns suspended from a ceiling in a hallway, each connected by a tripwire strung across the hallway below. When the victim stepped across the string, the wire would pull the triggers. The four shotguns would go off simultaneously, blowing the victim to pieces. In this case, the victim was Detective Sing, who was chasing Jigsaw through his warehouse in an attempt to capture him.
Original Idea: According to the Saw commentary and different interviews, the creators wanted a trap that consisted of two things that would spring from the walls and snap shut on Sing and fold him up into a box. They described it as an iron cocoon.[1] They decided against the idea, as it would have cost too much money for visual effects. A similar idea would later be brought up for the original concept of the Rack, which would again be scrapped.
[edit] The Bathroom Trap
Adam and Lawrence find themselves shackled to pipes in the Bathroom Trap. The setting of much of the first film, this trap involved two victims, Adam Faulkner and Dr. Lawrence Gordon, who had both been confined in a grimy industrial bathroom. Both were chained by the ankle to pipes at opposite ends of the bathroom. These pipes were connected to a remote electrical source. Since the chains were metal too, the electrical current conducted through those to Adam and Gordon. Also present in the room was a dead body, holding a gun, sitting in a pool of poisoned blood, just out of reach of the two prisoners. One of the prisoners, Lawrence, received a bullet, with which to load the gun and kill the other prisoner. He was told that if he didn't kill Adam by a certain time, Lawrence's family would be killed, and he'd be left to rot. In order to reach the gun, however, he had to saw off his own chained foot with a hacksaw that was hidden in the room. The other victim, Adam, would have to try to escape by sawing off his own leg and leaving. It should also be noted that the hacksaw's strength is only enough to saw through flesh and bone, but not the chains. Both tried to find alternatives, but could find none. Desperate to save his family, Lawrence was forced to saw his own foot off and retrieve the gun. He attempted to fatally shoot Adam, but closer inspection revealed that Lawrence only shot him in the shoulder. He then crawled out to find help. Adam, however, remained trapped. The dead body in the room was actually Jigsaw, who, after getting off the floor, told Adam that the key to unlock his chain was in the bathtub. The bathtub was filled with water at one point, and Adam accidentally drained it when he woke up, unwittingly sending the key into the drain. According to commentaries on Saw III, Amanda was supposed to have tied the key around his neck before leaving him, but had instead just left it on his chest. In the original script of Saw III, it revealed that Amanda had tied the chain to the bathtub stopper to Adam's ankle without being told to by Jigsaw. When Adam awoke, he scrambled from the tub, pulling the stopper out and sending the key down the drain. It is assumed that Lawrence either died from his wounds or could not relocate the bathroom, because the corpse of Adam was found in the Nerve Gas House in Saw II. In Saw III, it is revealed that Adam did not in fact die of starvation or dehydration after being locked away, but by suffocation. Amanda, feeling terribly guilty, decided to help him by sneaking into the bathroom and placing a strip of plastic wrap over his head, bringing him to a somewhat more timely death.
Original Idea: According to an interview with Leigh Whannell, Adam and Lawrence were originally going to be trapped in an elevator. The Bathroom Trap
Tape for Adam: Rise and shine, Adam. You're probably wondering where you are. I'll tell you where you might be. You might be in the room that you die in. Up until now you've simply sat in the shadows, watching others live out their lives. But what do voyeurs see when they look in the mirror? Now, I see you as a strange mix of someone angry, yet apathetic, but mostly just pathetic. So are you going to watch yourself die today, Adam, or do something about it?
Tape for Lawrence: Dr. Gordon, this is your wake up call. Every day of your working life you have given people the news that they're going to die soon. Now you will be the cause of death. Your aim in this game is to kill Adam. You have until 6 on the clock to do it. There's a man in the room with you. When there's that much poison in your blood, the only thing left to do is shoot yourself. There are ways to win this, hidden all around you. Just remember: "X" marks the spot for the treasure. If you do not kill Adam by 6, then Allison and Diana will die, Dr. Gordon, and I'll leave you in this room to rot. Let the game begin. Follow your heart.
[edit] Zep's Test
Some time before placing Lawrence and Adam in the Bathroom Trap, Jigsaw arranged for Zep Hindle, a hospital orderly, to become involved in a game of his own: Zep had to monitor the two prisoners in the Bathroom Trap to ensure that Lawrence killed Adam. If he didn't, then Zep would have to kill Lawrence's wife and daughter in order to attain an antidote to the poison flowing through his body. After Lawrence failed to kill Adam in time, Zep attempted to kill the mother and child, but failed to, as they got away. Making his way down to the Bathroom Trap, he then tried to kill Lawrence, but was instead beaten to death with a toilet lid by Adam.
Tape: Hello, Mr. Hindle. Or as they called you around the hospital: Zep. I want you to make a choice. There's a slow-acting poison coursing through your system, which only I have the antidote for. Will you murder a mother and her child to save yourself? Listen carefully, if you will; there are rules...
[edit] Saw II
While most of Saw II was played out in the the Nerve Gas House, listed below, other prototype traps were also seen in Jigsaw's lair, which was based at an abandoned Wilson Steel factory. While none were put to use, one of them was said to be a tribute to the Reverse Bear Trap from the first movie, while others represented the traps the victims inside the house would have to face. The traps of Saw II were as follows:
[edit] The Death Mask (a.k.a. The Venus Flytrap)
This trap was similar to an iron maiden device, but on a smaller scale. Consisting of a harness, attached to the victim's chest, it was only removable if the key to the padlock was obtained. Attached to the harness were two masks, opposite from each other and angled down from the victim's head. Each mask had several nails protruding inwards from the interior. The device was on a spring timer, and if it wasn't removed in time, the two masks would clamp together on the victim's head, like a Venus Flytrap, and drive the nails through his skull. The victim in this trap was Michael, a police informant. He woke up in an empty room, and found himself in the helmet. In order to remove the device, Michael had to find the key, which he soon learned, from a video tape and some X-rays of his own skull, was hidden behind his right eye. Supplied with a scalpel, he attempted to surgically remove his eye, but couldn't bring himself to do it, and threw the scalpel in anger. The timer went off, and the masks snapped shut on his head, killing him.
Original Idea: According to one of the features on the Saw II disc, Michael was originally going to be supplied with the key in one of his hands, but would be strapped to the chair at the wrists. Above the hand with the key was a razor, which would dig further into his flesh the more he reached the key up to the locks on his harness. Before filming the scene, a few crew members wanted Michael's eye to pop out as the masks snapped shut, but could not achieve the effect.
Tape: Hello, Michael. I want to play a game. So far in what could loosely be called your life, you've made a living watching others. Society would call you an informant, a rat, a snitch. I call you unworthy of the body you possess, of the life you've been given. Now we will see if you are willing to look inward, rather than outward, to give up on the one thing you rely on in order to go on living. The device around your neck is a death mask. The mask is on a spring timer. If you do not locate the key in time, the mask will close. Think of it like a Venus Flytrap. What you are looking at right now is your own body, not more than two hours ago. Don't worry, you're sound asleep and can't feel a thing. Taking into account that you are at a great disadvantage here, I am going to give you a hint as to where I've hidden the key. So listen carefully, the hint is this: it's right before your eyes. How much blood will you shed to stay alive, Michael? Live or die, make your choice.
[edit] The Electrified Staircase
This guard mechanism acted as protection from intruders in Jigsaw's lair. It consisted of a staircase with a rigged step, surrounded by a chain-link cage. The rigged step would spring forward and break the shins of the victim if enough pressure was applied to the stair below. This would also cause the cage door to shut, trapping the victim(s) in the cage. The cage would then be charged with an electric current, giving anyone in contact with it a lethal shock. When used in the movie, three SWAT officers were the victims. One of them stepped on the pressure-sensitive step, sending the rigged step forward and breaking his shins. As he fell back, the other two SWAT officers caught him and crashed into the caging, electrocuting them. The SWAT officer whose shins were broken survived, as he did not make contact with the electrified cage.
Original Idea: According to the Saw II commentary, a blade had originally been intended to shoot forward and slice off the first SWAT officer's legs once said rigged step had been activated.
[edit] The Nerve Gas House
This large-scale trap involved multiple victims in an abandoned house riddled with traps, containing one for each person. The victims breathed in a deadly nerve agent through the air-ducts as they navigated the house, and had to find the antidotes. The door to the house would eventually open on its own, but if they did not find an antidote, they would die before this happened. Each trap contained a way to get an antidote. Also inside the house, several weapons are found, including a single-edged blade and a bat with several nails driven through it. Aside from Laura, who succumbed to the nerve agent, the only others to die without the traps were Jonas, who got a blow to the back of the head with the nail-studded bat by Xavier, and Xavier, whose throat was slit with a hacksaw by Daniel.
Tape: Greetings and welcome. I trust that you are all wondering where you are. I can assure you that while your location is not important, what these walls offer for you is important. Salvation, if you earn it. Three hours from now the door to this house will open. Unfortunately, you only have two hours to live. Right now you are breathing in a deadly nerve agent. You've been breathing it since you arrived here. Those of you familiar with the Tokyo subway attacks will know its devastating effects on the human body. The only way to overcome it and walk out that door is to find an antidote. Several are hidden around this house. One is inside the safe in front of you. You all possess the combination to the safe. Think hard, the numbers are in the back of your mind. The clue to their order can be found over the rainbow. Once you realize what you all have in common, you will gain a better understanding of why you're here. "X" marks the spot for that clue, so look carefully. Let the game begin.
The majority of Saw II is played in the house. The traps shown to be contained in the house are as follows:
[edit] The Magnum Eyehole
This trap wasn't meant as a test so much as a security device to keep Jigsaw's subjects inside the room for the required length of time. It consisted of a large, metal, and locked door with a revolver firearm attached on the other side of the peephole, connected by a pulley and chain. The barrel of the revolver was aimed directly at the peephole, and when activated, would fire a bullet into whoever was in the line of fire. A note given to the players told them not to use the supplied key on the door, but refusing to listen, Xavier chose to use it anyway. Turning the key in the lock, he unknowingly activated the trap, turning the chain and causing the ridges of the pulley to set off the trigger of the gun. Gus was looking through the peephole at the time, and was shot in the head, through the eye. The door, on a timer, eventually opened on its own.Note: Do not attempt to use this key on the door to this room.
[edit] The Furnace
This trap was built like a furnace for cremating bodies. The victim had to crawl inside to retrieve two antidotes that were placed inside. One would be placed with a chain attached to the top of the furnace that, when pulled down, would close the door and ignite the furnace. The only way out was to twist a knob that turned off the gas. Obi fell victim to this and almost escaped through the window on the other side, but wasn't able to fit. He burned to death. The knob had a painting of a devil pointing to it which said "twist". This clarified Jigsaw's line, "Once you are in Hell, only the devil can help you out."
Original Idea: Before settling on the final version of the Furnace, the creators and writers of Saw II had originally thought of having Obi's tape recorder attached to the collar of a pitbull in the basement. They decided against it, as it would lead to cruelty to animals, and instead attached it to a corpse-like mannequin.
Tape: Hello Obi. I want to play a game. For years, you've burned those around you with your lies, cons, and deceits. Now you'll have to redeem yourself, for the games you've played with others, by playing one of mine. Inside the device in front of you are two antidotes for the poison coursing through your veins. One is my gift to you for helping me kidnap the others. The second is yours to donate. However, one of them will not win the prize. Remember, when you're in hell, only the Devil can help you out.
[edit] The Needle Pit (Needle in a Haystack)
This trap involved a pit in the middle of a room, filled with thousands of filthy, used syringes. A locked door in the room held an antidote, but was set on a four minute timer. If the timer expired, the door would remain locked forever. This trap was meant for Xavier, a drug dealer, who would have to jump into the pit of needles to find the key to the door. The key was attached to a glow stick, and was hidden among the syringes; however, instead of going in himself, he picked up Amanda and threw her in to find the key. Although she found the key in time, Xavier fumbled with it and was unable to unlock the door in time. This trap, unlike many of Jigsaw's other traps, would not kill the victim if they failed the task, but was more of a punishment (although the victim would still die from the effects of the nerve agent unless an antidote was found).
Original Idea: The creators and writers of Saw II had originally intended for Amanda to land up to her neck in the needles as if it were a pool, but realized that it would be impossible for her to sink into such a pool. Also, getting enough needles would have taken too long, as it took the production team a long time to get as many needles as they had.
Tape: Hello, Xavier. I want to play a game. The game I want to play is very similar to the one that you've been playing as a drug dealer. The game of offering hope to the desperate, for a price. I think we can agree that your situation is desperate. So I offer you hope. The price that you pay is that you must crawl into the same pit of squalor you force your customers into. By entering this room, a timer has been started. When the timer expires, the door in front of you will be locked forever. Only in finding the key before the timer runs out can you unlock and retrieve the antidote inside. I will give you just one hint as to where that key is: it will be like finding a needle in a haystack. Let the game begin.
[edit] The Razorbox Trap
This trap involved a glass container which was suspended from the ceiling. Inside the box was an antidote which was accessible by two holes underneath the box that were big enough to fit one's arms through. Once they put their arms through, however, they would realize that the corners of the holes were fitted with blades that would bend up if something was inserted and if the person tried to take their hands out, the blades would dig into their arms, and the harder they pulled, the deeper the blades would go in. Addison, a prostitute, fell victim to this trap. At first, she only inserted one hand, and may have been able to push open the blades and free herself (cylinders extending downward from the holes in the box would have made this extremely difficult), but the plunger to the needle was stuck to the bottom. When she pulled the needle up, the antidote inside spilled. Panicking, she reached her other hand inside to grab it, trapping herself. As she tried to pull out her arms the blades began to cut up her arms. It is unknown if she survived. However, due to the nerve agent that had already killed Laura, and the fact that Addison had lost so much blood from the blades, it is virtually impossible that she lived. It is later revealed in a featurette on the construction of the trap for the set that if the victim were to walk to the other side of the box, they would see a lock with a key sticking out of it, which in turn would have unlocked the box and allowed them to access the antidote without harm. If one looks closely enough during the movie you can see the key for a few seconds. Although Addison fell victim to this trap, it was intended for Gus.
Original Idea: Before deciding to place Addison in the Razor Box Trap, the creators and writers discussed on a commentary for Saw II that they had originally intended for Addison to end up in a different trap, which was similar to a waffle iron. It would clamp down on Addison’s hands when she reached for an antidote, and burn them until released. The only way to unlock it would be to apply pressure to the top, which would have to be done by her head, as both of her hands would be trapped. By pressing her face against the top, she would open the mechanism up, freeing her hands and escaping at the price of burning and scarring her face.
Tape: According to the commentary on the DVD for Saw II, the tape for Gus would have said something along the lines of him always "reaching his hand into the cookie jar for money," while Addison's would talk about her having to sacrifice her looks to escape her original trap. When Addison walked into the room, she found an envelope with the tape inside. Tearing it open, she found the tape for Gus, but tossed it aside, as she didn't have the tape recorder to play it.
[edit] Detective Matthews' Test
After having his son Daniel kidnapped and placed in the Nerve Gas house by Jigsaw, Detective Eric Matthews discovered Jigsaw's lair, and with the S.W.A.T. team, he tried to convince Jigsaw to give up the whereabouts of the house. Jigsaw proposed a deal, stating that all Matthews has to do was listen, and he would get his son back. Though Detective Mathews did listen for a while, he eventually got tired of Jigsaw's game and instead resorted to brutality. After beating Jigsaw to within an inch of his life, Jigsaw ended the game, and took Matthews to the house. The detective entered the house, only to find that his son was not there. It was then revealed that Daniel was actually in the area where Eric first found John Kramer, locked in a timed safe that was supplied with oxygen. The video feeds shown to the SWAT team and Eric were actually a recording from hours before, when the house test was taking place. Eric needed only to keep his patience and Daniel would have been released to him only a few feet away. After entering the bathroom hidden in the foundation of the house, Eric was attacked by Amanda, disguised in a pig mask, as she leaped out and jabbed a syringe into the detective, drugging him. When he awoke, he was chained to a pipe. Amanda showed up in the doorway, and shut it, leaving him in the dark with the dead bodies of Xavier, Zep, Adam, and Dr. Gordon's decaying sawed-off foot. However, it was discovered in Saw III that Eric managed to escape into the hallway after breaking his foot, almost severing it off by using the toilet tank cover. When he escaped, however, he confronted Amanda in the hallway. The two of them had a fight, and Amanda began to believe that Eric had not learned anything from his trap. After kicking him in his broken foot, she decided to leave him to die in the hallway. While Amanda was walking away from Matthews, he began to taunt and mock her. Amanda, in turn, turned back and walked back over to Matthews, later implying that she murdered him; however, Jigsaw instead believed that she left him for dead. A deleted scene in Saw III showed Amanda going back to Eric after his taunting, and brutally slashing him to death. However, in Saw IV, it is revealed that, after the fight, Eric was dragged into a holding cell by a masked person (presumably Detective Hoffman) and supplied with food and a brace for his broken foot for six months. The reasoning behind this was that Eric was going to be used in a future test for Lieutenant Rigg.
Tape (in Amanda's voice): Hello, Eric. You probably don't even remember me, but you changed my life once. You sent me to prison. I was guilty of a lot of things, but not for the drug charge you framed me for. You wouldn't know the things you lose when you're locked away. The second time somebody changed my life, I was guilty, but my life was saved that day. I found myself a father, a leader, a teacher. What is the cure for cancer, Eric? The cure for death itself? The answer...is immortality. By creating a legacy, by living a life worth remembering, you become immortal. So now we find the tables are turned. It is I who will carry on John's work after he dies, and you are my first test subject. Now you are locked away, helpless and alone...Game over.
[edit] Saw III
As was in Saw II, many prototype traps and designs were seen in Jigsaw's new lair, which was based at an abandoned meat packing factory. Inside, along and atop many tables, shelves, and walls, sat many deadly looking devices. These included the Reverse Bear Trap from the first film, placed on a mannequin head, as well as obvious test devices for traps from the third film, like the Ribcage Harness, and conceptual art for the Rack. The traps and tests for the third movie were as follows:
[edit] The Classroom Trap/The Body Chains Trap
This trap featured Troy, who found himself in an empty school classroom, with eleven chains hooked into his flesh in various places. A television screen turned on and Billy appeared on it. He revealed that Troy had been in and out of prisons for quite some time. If he wished to live, he had to break free of the chains before the timer stopped. If time ran out, a bomb, sitting next to a jar of nails, would detonate. The chains were hooked into his lower jaw, shoulders, arms, hands, obliques, legs, and Achilles tendons. When the television screen turned off, he began to painfully rip the chain rings from his skin. Troy managed to pull off all of the chains except for the one attached to his head. The chain ring was looped through his lower jaw and it did not seem possible for Troy to rip it out in time. He was not able to, and was killed when the timer triggered the bomb. It was later revealed by Kerry, as she studied his nail-ridden corpse, that there was no escape route for Troy, as the door to the room had been welded shut. Also, as the final chain was attached to the strongest bone of the face, there would be no way for him to remove it with just his bare hands. This was the first of Amanda's inescapable traps.
Original Ideas: Before settling on the final version of the Classroom Trap, the creators and writers of Saw III went through a couple different versions of game. One of them had Troy suspended above the floor of the classroom by large meat hooks. They decided against this, as they figured it would be basically impossible to escape, and that it would be more thrilling if he was standing and able to rip the chains out. A second version had the hooks going through his eyelids, his fingernails, and his teeth. This accounts for two of the promotional posters for the film, one showing a mouth missing numerous teeth, and another showing three teeth dangling from wires.
Tape: Hello, Troy. I want to play a game. This game will take place in a room not much bigger than the room you spent most of your life in: a prison cell. Despite all of the advantages and privileges that you were given at birth, you have returned to prison again and again. More comfortable in chains than you are in freedom? Tonight, we will see how far you are willing to go to break those chains once and for all. Live or die, Troy. Make your choice.
[edit] The Angel Trap/The Ribcage Harness
Kerry woke up suspended above the floor in a contraption which consisted of a leather harness, hung from the ceiling by numerous chains, with two sets of needles along each side of her torso. Upon further examination of her harness, she found that the two sets of needles on her torso were pierced into her ribcage, each needle hooked into a rib. Each array of needles was attached to one of two metal arches behind her that, for the time being, remained folded. Hanging next to her was a jar filled with acid into which a key was dropped in as she woke up. The jar was also suspended by chains, and was unable to be tipped over. A TV turned on in front of her and delivered Kerry her instructions. Billy informed Kerry that she was "dead on the inside" and that was why she seemed to enjoy working in situations with death. He also implied to Kerry that the device would rip her ribcage out, knowing that Kerry would understand what he meant. Billy told her that she had one minute to retrieve the key from the jar after the video ended before the key was dissolved by the acid and before the timer on the device ran out. After hesitating, Kerry plunged her hand into the jar and severely burned it, but failed to get the key. Screaming in pain, she plunged her hand in a second time and successfully grabbed the key. She pulled out her bloodied, severely corroded hand, and unlocked the padlock on her harness. Upon removing the lock, however, she found that she was unable to remove the harness itself. The trap was never intended to be escapable, as each of the pins were hooked directly into her ribcage, and there was a second lock at the back of the device that held it in place. This was the second of Amanda's inescapable traps. As Kerry realized that the trap was impossible to get out of, Amanda entered the room, revealing herself as the inventor of the trap. With that revelation, Kerry raised her arms and clenched the chains she was hanging from as the two arms attached to the harness arched upwards like a pair of wings (hence the name of the trap), and pulled each side of the harness with them, causing the needles embedded in her torso to rip both sides of her ribcage out in opposite directions. She collapsed and died in the leather straps as her internal organs spilled out onto the floor. It has been speculated that the lock in the front of her chest would have prevented the angel trap from following through.
Orginal Idea: According to producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules, they had originally discussed having Kerry placed in a device that would pull her arms and legs in four different directions, but instead decided on the ribcage trap. However the idea was used in the Saw IV FEEL WHAT I FEEL trap.
Tape:
Hello, Kerry. I want to play a game. Up until now, you have spent your life among the dead, piecing together their final moments. You're good at this because you, like them, are also dead. Dead... on the inside. You identify more with a cold corpse than you do with a living human. I believe you want to join your true family, indead your only family, in death. The device you are wearing is hooked into your ribcage, and by the time this tape is finished, you will have one minute to find a way out. At the end of that minute... you should know better than anyone what happens then. There is a simple key that will unlock the harness, Kerry. It is right in front of you. All you have to do is reach in and take it... but do it quickly. The acid will dissolve the key in a matter of seconds... Make your choice.
[edit] The Shotgun Collar
Amanda placed a collar equipped with five loaded shotgun shells onto Lynn. The hammers behind each shell were clicked back, and the collar responded with Jigsaw's heart rate monitor. If he flatlined, or if Lynn moved out of range, or if the collar was removed incorrectly, the shells would detonate, killing her instantly. Lynn was forced to operate on Jigsaw to keep him alive long enough for Jeff to complete his series of trials in the abandoned plant. When he did, Jigsaw ordered Amanda to remove the collar from Lynn, as she had completed her task; however, Amanda refused. It was possible that this trap was inescapable, due to the fact that the trap was made by Amanda. This could also be backed up in a deleted scene in which Lynn managed to get the key from Amanda, only to find that it did not seem to fit in the lock. After an argument in the makeshift hospital room with Amanda and Jigsaw, Lynn was shot in the back by Amanda as Jeff arrived on the scene. Jeff was left with a final choice to kill Jigsaw or forgive him, not knowing that his death would lead to Lynn's due to the collar. Lynn desperately tried to tell Jeff not to, but was wheezing from the gunshot. As Jigsaw's neck was then slashed by Jeff with a circular saw, his heart rate monitor activated the collar on Lynn, which began beeping. As Jigsaw flatlined, the collar fired the shells, blowing apart Lynn's head against a wall.
Original Ideas: Originally, Lynn's collar was going to be more along the lines of a bomb, hence Jigsaw's line, "an explosion will go off in that collar". The collar would detonate, shaking the room, knocking the dead Jigsaw from his bed, and knocking Jeff unconscious.
Jigsaw's words to Lynn: I want to play a game. The rules of the game are simple. The consequences for breaking them are great: death. You're being tested. Your will is being tested; the will to keep someone alive. Can you do that? Can you follow the rules and grant someone the gift of life? The device you are wearing is linked to my heart rate monitor. The second that heart rate monitor flatlines, or you move out of range, an explosion will go off in that collar. Your life, and my life, will end simultaneously.
[edit] Jeff's Trials
Jeff wakes up in an empty shipping crate, which is elevated on a pair of forklift prongs. Upon escaping, he is required to walk through an abandoned meat packaging plant that contains the victims of the Freezer Room, Pig Vat, and the Rack. Each person in each trap is directly or indirectly involved in Jeff's son's death. He has to play through each scenario and decide whether or not to forgive and assist the person in the room or watch them die a horrible death, and he has to do so within two hours time, or he would be locked in the plant forever.
Tape: Hello Jeff. Over the past few years you have become a shell of your former self; consumed with hatred and vengeance. Vengeance against the drunk driver who killed your only son. Vengeance against the killer, who to your surprise and dismay, was set free after a hasty trial. Today, however, it is you who will be put on trial. To escape from where you are, you will have to face a series of tests. You will have to suffer to move forward through each of them. But with each one, you will also have a chance; a chance to forgive. When you complete the tests, I promise you you will finally come face to face with the man responsible for the loss of your child. That will be your ultimate test. Can you forgive him? You better hurry though. In two hours the doors will lock, and this place will become your tomb. This is what you've been waiting for, Jeff. Let the game begin.
In more detail, his tests were:
[edit] The Freezer Room
Danica Scott was suspended by her arms in a walk-in freezer, where her naked body was systematically sprayed by water from twelve hoses, linked along two vertical poles at her sides. Jeff was forced to decide whether or not to help her. Danica was the one witness to the death of Jeff's son, and she fled the scene, giving Jeff the choice to save her or let her freeze to death. Jeff's task was to retrieve the key that would unlock Danica's bindings, as well as the door to the next room to escape the freezer room. The key was suspended behind a wall of icy cold pipes, just out of Jeff's reach. The only way he was able to get the key was by leaning just far enough that his face pressed against one of the pipes, causing the flesh of his cheek to stick to it. Grabbing the key, Jeff pulled back, tearing away part of the flesh on his cheek. Danica froze to death before Jeff could save her, quickly becoming encased in ice. Jeff left as more water sprayed, building up the ice on her further. After leaving the freezer room, Jeff found a bullet, and a scrap of a photo to go with the first one he found before the ice shower. This trap was similar to an act of torture reputedly given by the infamous Elizabeth Báthory.Original Ideas: Before settling on the final version of the Freezer Room, the creators and writers of Saw III went through a few different versions of the game, with only minor changes. Originally, the victim was going to be a male police officer, but they decided against it, instead going with the idea of a female witness. Instead of being completely naked, Danica was going to be in a T-shirt and panties, but they figured having her being sprayed would make the shirt stick to her body and become too sexual, so they decided to put her in the freezer naked instead.
Tape: Welcome to your first test, Jeff. For the past three years, you've cursed the name of all those you thought were responsible for the death of your son. You've fantasized that those accountable will pay. Well, you will find a woman in front of you chained in place. This will prevent her from running, much like she did on the day your son was hit. Her name is Danica Scott. She was the only witness present at the scene of your son's untimely demise. If not for her own self absorption and cowardice, she could have brought your son's killer to justice. Now it is you, who has a chance to bring her to justice. You alone can grant her the gift of life, before she freezes to death. Behind the pipes on the back wall, you will find the key that will free her and bring you one step closer to the man responsible for the loss of your child. Will you claim the key to save only yourself, or can you find it within you to save another? Make your choice.
[edit] The Intestine Pool/Pig Vat
Upon entering a room, Jeff heard the voice of a man screaming for help. As he searched around for the man, a large silo in the middle of the room began to emit a loud, pulsating buzz. Jeff climbed up a ladder to see a man shackled to the bottom of the silo by a metal brace holding his neck. As he screamed for help, Jeff played a tape supplied to him. Jigsaw told him that when the judge presiding over his son's murder trial sentenced the murderer so lightly, his soul never recovered. He now had the power to sentence the man's soul straight to hell, or he could choose to forgive. As the tape ended, a series of large, interlocking saws in an adjoining silo began to whirl and buzz. Hanging from a conveyor like bar came out dead, maggot-ridden rotten pig corpses. The pig was dropped into the silo with the saw blades and ground up, leaving the large amount of thick grey liquid remains to pour down a chute into the silo with the judge, hitting him in the face and gradually filling the silo. More dead pigs were pulled in on the rotating chain and dropped, one after the other, into the saws. Soon, enough pigs had been liquefied to fill the silo nearly enough to drown Judge Halden. In order to save him, Jeff had to find the key to the judge's neck brace. The key was in an incinerator, along with all of his son's possessions (photographs, stuffed animals). In order to retrieve the key, he had to ignite the incinerator to burn everything, leaving only the key remaining. Jeff did so reluctantly, and retrieved the key. The key was also needed to leave the silo and move on to the next room. The judge managed to escape thanks to Jeff's help, but was later accidentally shot in the head after following Jeff into another trap. After the two of them left, Jeff found a third shred of the photo, and a gun magazine which would house the bullet he found earlier.
Original Ideas: Before settling on the final version of the Pig Vat, the creators and writers of Saw III went through a couple different versions of game. One of them had Judge Halden suspended above a meat grinder. As he was lowered down into it, Jeff would have to dive into a "soup" (probably referring to the ground up pigs that were instead poured onto the Judge) to retrieve the key. It was changed again until it resembled the final version, with the exception that Jeff wouldn't have to burn his son's possessions, but simply step down into the silo to free the judge. Leigh Whannell said on the commentary for Saw III that one of the reasons for the final change was that merely having Jeff dive into pig guts was more akin to something on Fear Factor, and that by burning his son's possessions, it was more of an emotional conflict for Jeff than a physical one.
Tape: Jeff, when the judge presiding over your case sentenced your boy's murderer so lightly, your soul never recovered. Now, you have the power to sentence his soul straight to hell. Or, you could forgive. The key that will free him is hidden inside your son's possessions, possessions you have clung to for far too long. Now if you flip the switch on the incinerator underneath you, a fire will cleanse you of this obsession and destroy them all, leaving only the key remaining. It is also the key that will bring you closer to the man accountable for taking your child. He doesn't have much time, Jeff. Let the game begin.
[edit] The Rack/The Twisting Crucifix
Jeff stumbled upon this trap after saving the judge from the Pig Vat. Timothy, the victim in the trap, turned out to be the man responsible for the death of Jeff's son. The victim's head was held in place by a rotating lock, while the arms and legs were held in place by spikes through the hands and feet. Each section began rotating around 180 degrees, one by one, taking his arms, legs, and head along with it and breaking the bones. Jigsaw stated on Tim's tape that this trap was a particular favorite of his, calling it "The Rack." The only way to free Tim would be to obtain a key that was attached to a shotgun's trigger; if the key was taken, the shotgun would go off and shoot Jeff. The key was also needed to leave the room and continue through to the next room. The shotgun and key were kept suspended in a glass box that Judge Halden attempted to break without success. Tim's arms and legs were rotated one by one, and the bones broke, some jabbing straight through his flesh in the process. As the judge watched Tim's bones slowly break one by one, Jeff managed to untie the key from the shotgun, holding onto the cord long enough to move his own body out of the line of fire. As he let go, the cord set off the gun, instead shooting the judge in the head and killing him. Jeff rushed over to Tim just as his head began to rotate; however, he failed to locate the key-hole in time, and Tim's neck was fatally broken. The gears slowed down after Tim's head twisted around 180 degrees. After Jeff left, he found the last piece of the photograph, showing him and his family. He also found the last piece of the gun, and assembled it.Original Ideas: Before settling on the final version of the Rack, the creators and writers of Saw III went through a couple different versions of game. One of them had Timothy strapped down to a table that would fold on its hinges, bending his body with it and breaking his back. A similar idea had been brought up once before when thinking about Detective Steven Sing's trap. It was remodeled into the shape of a cross, but would still bend along hinges that would break Timothy's body until they decided they wanted the individual limbs being twisted instead.
Tape: Hello Jeff. If you are listening to this, that means that the confrontation you so long dreamed of is finally unfolding. In your head he is a cypher, a symbol of your life changing, a symbol of death. I present him to you now as a simple human being. His name is Timothy Young, he's 27 years old, a medical student with a mother and a father just like you. A man whose life also changed on the day your son died. That day he made a terrible mistake. You believed he didn't pay for that mistake, and now is your chance to make him pay. The device Timothy is strapped to is my personal favorite. I call it "The Rack." The human body is a miraculous creation. Ever wonder how far the arm can twist? This device is going to start twisting. There is a chance he might live though, with your help. To your right is a box. At the back of the box is a key. It's tied to the trigger of a shotgun. The question you have to ask yourself is this: are you willing to take a bullet for the man who killed your son? Does "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" apply here, Jeff? Make your choice.
[edit] Jeff's Confrontation/Revenge or Forgiveness
Upon completion of the tests, Jeff exited the abandoned plant and entered Jigsaw's lair. During the confrontation, Jigsaw gave him the choice of killing him and taking revenge, or making the ultimate choice of forgiveness. However, unknown to Jeff, the choice of killing Jigsaw would ultimately kill his wife Lynn as well, as his death would activate the shotgun collar placed on her. This choice was the true aim of Jeff's test. He ended up killing Jigsaw by slicing his neck with an electric circular saw, and the movie ended with Jigsaw playing a final tape before he died. The tape informed Jeff that Jigsaw was the one responsible for the loss of Jeff's child- his daughter Corbett, who was locked away with a limited air supply. The tape also left the possibility of a prearranged game that Jigsaw left for Jeff prior to his death with the tape's final line, "and if you want to get her back, you'll have to play a game."
Original Ideas: Before settling on the final version of the Confrontation, the creators and writers of Saw III shot numerous different versions, all resulting in Jigsaw's death at the hands of Jeff. The only differences were the weapons of choice, among them the original circular saw blade that Jeff picked up before finding the high power saw. An alternate ending was also shot, using the concept of Lynn's "bomb" collar, which would detonate and shake the room following Jigsaw's death, knocking Jeff to the floor, unconscious. Upon awakening, Jeff would then find a tape, possibly the one Jigsaw played after his throat was slit in the given ending.
Jigsaw's words to Jeff: You haven't learned anything tonight, have you? Your rage and your vengeance will only hurt the ones you love. Killing me will only add to your misery, it will not bring back your son. Think of your daughter Jeff. She needs you now more than ever. You can't kill me, Jeff. Your wife's dying, Jeff. Her time's running out. Jeff, do not miscalculate. Your fate is in my hands. Your wife's fate is in my hands. Though you may not see any threat, there are threats all around you. Jeff, if you try to move your wife, she will die. I can have an ambulance here in four minutes. Would you like to take your wife out of here tonight? Would you like to take her to safety? Stand and face me Jeff. Right now. Would you like to get your life back? Would you, Jeff? I can make that happen. Which is it, Jeff? Come on, yes or no? One final test. The rules are simple. Over on that table, there's a host of vicious implements, which you can use to exact your pound of flesh, to take your vengeance, to indulge your obsession. Or, you can choose to put your vengeance aside, and you can forgive. You can forgive me for the pain that I've caused you and your wife tonight. Which is it gonna be, Jeff? It's up to you. Live or die, Jeff, make our choice.
Tape: Hello Jeff, I made this tape as an insurance policy, if you will, and if you're listening to it then it's time to collect. I was your final test of forgiveness, and if you are listening to this, then you failed. Now you must pay the price. The price for living a life of nothing but vengeance. Now I will give you something to live for. I told you that you couldn't kill me, Jeff, but I didn't tell you why. And the answer is simple: I am the person responsible for the loss of your child. I am the only person who knows where your daughter is. She only has a limited supply of air left, Jeff, and if you want her back, you'll have to play a game...
[edit] Amanda's Test
After becoming Jigsaw's apprentice, Amanda began to crack under the pressure. She soon became a killer, making traps that had no possibility of escape, such as the Classroom Chain and the Angel Trap. Jigsaw realized this, and decided to give her another test to prove that she was willing and able to continue on his work after his death. After having her kidnap his next players (Lynn and Jeff), Jigsaw began testing her patience and temper, gradually building up her stress as Lynn was forced to assist him while wearing another of Amanda's devices, the Shotgun Collar. When Jeff completed his test, Jigsaw told Amanda to take off Lynn's collar, but she refused. He asked again, telling her that her life rested in Lynn's hands. She instead snapped and shot Lynn, just as Jeff entered the room. It turned out that Jeff was Lynn's husband, and was now equipped with a loaded gun which he used to shoot Amanda in the neck. She died of blood loss while Jigsaw revealed to her that it was her test all along, and that he had given her the rules when she thought he was talking to Lynn.
Jigsaw's first words to Amanda (misconceived to be just for Lynn at the time): I want to play a game. The rules of the game are simple. The consequences for breaking them are great: death. You're being tested. Your will is being tested; the will to keep someone alive. Can you do that? Can you follow the rules and grant someone the gift of life?
Jigsaw's last words to Amanda: Amanda, it's OK. This was your test. Your game. I was testing you. I took you in. I selected you for the honor of carrying on my life's work. But you didn't. You didn't test anyone's will to live. Instead you took away their only chance. Your games were unwinnable, your subjects merely victims. In my desperation, I decided to give you one last chance. So I put everything in place. You didn't know that Lynn and Jeff were husband and wife. I had to keep that from you for the purposes of my game. I had to leave out the ruined marriage, the cheating wife, the vengeful husband, the neglected daughter, and I let you make your own choices. I wanted you to succeed, but you couldn't. God. Game over.
[edit] Saw IV
One trap in Saw IV has been said to involve rats, although no further information was given.[2] Another trap, dubbed the best in the movie by director Darren Lynn Bousman, was said to have came during a slow point in filming, when he improvised a new scene.[3] A character named Cecil was also revealed in an interview to die in a test.[4] Says David Hackl, a designer of the traps for the series, in an interview with MTV, "The traps are going to be more elegant and much stronger. These will be more of a mental puzzle; they'll make you think."[5]
[edit] The Knife Chair
A man named Cecil was trapped in what was referred to first in an interview as the Knife Chair, later revealed to be Jigsaw's first created trap. He woke up with his arms bound to the armrests of a wooden chair, with blades jutting upwards into his forearms. A panel level with Cecil's face was connected to the arm restraints. Pushing it forward would release the restraints and free him. Jigsaw, who was present in the room, applied a large apparatus to the chair, consisting of eight blades enclosed around Cecil's head. Jigsaw then instructed Cecil in what to do, telling him that to release himself from the chair, he had to force his face through the blades to push the panel, matching his "internal ugliness" by scarring his face. Cecil, after sitting and screaming for help, began pushing his face through while Jigsaw watched. However, before Cecil could complete his test, the chair collapsed. Standing up with the restraints still lodged in his arms, Cecil threatened to kill John, and lunged at him. Jigsaw side-stepped, causing Cecil to fall into a pile of hanging razor wire where Jigsaw left him to die, also giving Jigsaw the idea for Paul's trap.Jigsaw originally was following Cecil around after the loss of his unborn child, and was formulating a tape for this trap. However, he opted to describe it to Cecil in person.
Description:
Cecil: "Whoa! What the fuck is that?!"
John: " It's the tool. The tool that's going to save your life. I want to play a game Your life is a lie, Cecil. Now comes your moment of truth. As a drug addict and a thief, you've preyed on the kindness of others to fuel your addiction. Today, we're bringing the ugliness inside you out into the open. Now, in order for you to stay alive, we have to match your face with the ugliness of your soul. Just lean forward into the knives with your face. Press hard enough and you'll release the arm and the leg restraints that bind you"
Cecil: "HELP!!!"
John: "Press hard though, and you'll be free."
Cecil: " You-you sick fuck! Fuck you!"
John: "Or you sit lightly and bleed out on the floor. Live or die, Cecil. Make your choice."
[edit] The Mausoleum Trap
A man, Trevor, woke up on the floor of a mausoleum with a locked collar around his neck, attached to a chain. He began to panic when he realized that his eyes had been sewn shut, rendering him blind. He started pulling on the chain to try to release himself, waking up a second man, Art Blank, on the other side of the room. Art realized he was shackled by a similar collar to the opposite end of the same chain. Art's mouth had been sewn shut, rendering him mute. Between the two of them was a winding drum, with a trigger-tab in place inside a large cylinder that the chain passed through.
During the ensuing struggle, Trevor knocked over a chair with multiple instruments on it, including a hammer, an ax, and some meat-hooks. As he began pulling on the chain, drawing Art closer to the machine, the tab was pulled out, activating the device. The cylinder began to rotate, slowly reeling in the chain and pulling both men closer together. They both pulled back and forth on the chain, each getting closer to the machine, though the lack of communication made it impossible for them to work together on solving the puzzle. Art spotted a key on the back of Trevor's collar and realized that it might open the one around his own neck. As he made his way over, he armed himself with the ax to protect himself before the two men started fighting. Trevor swung a hook wildly, eventually stabbing Art in the leg. Art, however, still managed to get the key from the back of Trevor's collar after stabbing the hook into his shoulder. As Art attempted to unlock his collar, Trevor attacked again, and Art was forced to kill him by smashing his head in with the hammer. Finally, Art fumbled to try to open the lock on his collar. He managed to remove it, and screamed, ripping his mouth open.
During a flashback later in the movie, Art subsequently found a file folder elsewhere in the mausoleum, with "THE KEY TO YOUR FREEDOM" written on its cover. Sitting atop the folder was a tape recorder, which delivered a congratulatory message to Art
[edit] Rigg's Trials
Lieutenant Rigg, after becoming obsessed with finding his friend Eric Matthews (who had been missing for 6 months), was thrust into a game of his own with 90 minutes to find Matthews and Hoffman. Rigg, in the past six months, had been too busy making sure his friends didn't make the wrong choices, in the process preventing himself from making the right ones. Rigg's obsession to save everyone was a fault in Jigsaw's eyes, and as such, he tested Rigg, trying to teach him how he should truly save a life. To do this, Rigg took on the role of Jigsaw during his tests, doing such tasks as kidnapping, testing, saving, and eventually judging his victims, ultimately teaching him the value of why he can't and shouldn't try to save all of the people, all of the time. His test began in his home, where he was attacked and rendered unconscious by a hooded assailant. Rigg woke up in his bathroom, with a "?" painted on the door. Arming himself with a door-hook, he opened the door, pulling a trigger-pin that activated a TV in the next room that explained his test, revealing to him that Eric Matthews was still alive.
Tape:
Hello, Officer Rigg, welcome to your rebirth. For years, you have stood by and witnessed as your colleagues have fallen. You have remained untouched, while Eric Matthews has disappeared. But, with your survival became your obsession. Obsession to stop those around you from making the wrong choices, thus preventing you from making the right ones. You wanted to save everyone. Tonight, I will give you the opportunity to face your obsession. Look closely. Eric Matthews is still alive. The block of ice he stands upon is melting. He has but 90 minutes to save himself. Detective Hoffman's fate is linked to Eric's survival. Heed my warning Officer Rigg: Their lives hang in the balance of your obsession. Will you learn how to let go... and truly save them? The choice is yours.
In more detail, his tests were:
[edit] See What I See
A woman named Brenda wore a red cloak and a pig mask, chained to a device with numerous gears and a dial. A tape recorder was duct-taped to the palm of her left hand, and her long hair was twisted though a metal ring and wound up along an axle connected to the gears. She was stuck in a room in Rigg's apartment with numerous photos of herself pimping young girls, posted and hung up around the room, with the words, "SEE WHAT I SEE" scribbled above a bookcase beside her. Rigg entered the room, setting off the timer which began counting down from 90:00, and found Brenda panicking, trying to escape her chains. A TV in front of her turned on, and Rigg was told that she was a criminal. Jigsaw advised him to just walk away from the situation and let Brenda die instead of giving into his obsession of saving everybody. Rigg pulled the pig mask and cloak off of the woman, pulling a trigger-pin that was attached by a cord to the mask,[10] activating the machine. A one-minute timer began counting down as the gears on the device began turning, arching Brenda's head back as her hair was yanked and wound along an axle. After having her gag removed, Brenda screamed for help, telling Rigg to hurry, and that the combination for the dial was hidden in the gears. She continued to scream for help while Rigg scrambled around looking for something to stop the device. Upon opening a drawer, he found a card that read "Time is wasting." Brenda's hairline ripped and began to spurt blood before Rigg returned and tried shooting the machine with his handgun, merely slowing the machine down for a few seconds before it continued to tear Brenda's scalp from her head. Rigg began reading numbers on the cogs twisting her hair and programmed the code, 6-4-7, into the dial on the machine. Brenda was released, although half of her scalp had been torn from her head. When Rigg left the room to grab towels, however, Brenda grabbed a knife from underneath the TV set and attacked him when he returned to the room. After pulling back on her hair and throwing her into a mirror, he took the knife, noticing a "G" written on it,[11] and ripped the tape recorder from Brenda's hand. The tape revealed that Jigsaw told her that Rigg was a cop, and that if he was successful in saving her from the device, her test would begin; explaining that Rigg would use the incriminating photos of Brenda to sentence her, Jigsaw told her that solution to avoid jail-time was to kill Rigg with the knife. Leaving Brenda bleeding on the floor, Rigg found a card, next to two keys, that read, "One saves a life... one takes it away." The first key was for a room in Rigg's second test, while the second key was for Rigg's third test. When the police and FBI arrived at Rigg's apartment, they found Brenda dead from her injuries. They also found the words "FOUR WALLS BUILD A HOME" written in illuminated paint.
The point of this test was to see Brenda as a criminal as Jigsaw would have, not as a victim as Rigg believed.
Rigg's Tape:
Officer Rigg, your first test. The person in front of you is in desparate need of help. But it is not your job to save them. You view this person as a victim, but if you were to SEE WHAT I SEE, beneath the mask is a criminal undeserving of the life she leads. Your obsession tells you to save the victim. I tell you to walk away. The choice is yours.
Brenda's Tape:
Hello, Brenda. I want to play a game. An officer will try to save you. If he is successful, then your game begins. This man will use these photos to sentence you for your crimes and the only way to stop him is taped underneath the TV. Let him save you and accept your fate and rot in prison...or kill him and guarantee your freedom. Make your choice.
[edit] Feel What I Feel
The next test began as Rigg entered room 261 of the Alexander Motel, the motel presumably owned by a man called Ivan Landsness. In the room, Rigg found a box with a picture of his wife, Tracy sitting atop it. The back of the photo had a note for Rigg that read, "SHE NEEDED YOU". Looking at the box, Rigg noticed some long strands of hair sticking out of it. Opening it, he found the infamous pig mask used by Jigsaw and Amanda Young, a tape recorder, and a photo of Ivan. The tape told Rigg that he would need to grab Ivan, but to do so, would have to conceal his identity from the motel cameras. To do this, Rigg put the pig mask on. Ivan knocked on the door, but was pulled in and ordered at gunpoint to enter the room opposite the one they were in, which had "FEEL WHAT I FEEL" scrawled on the door. In this room were several pictures of various murdered women and a bed with four shackles connected to large posts standing upwards from the corners of the bed, each equipped with numerous chains gears. Flashbacks later showed that a "G" was marked on one of the shackles.[12] It was revealed by a video tape in the corner of the room that Ivan was a serial rapist, responsible for raping and torturing unfortunate women. The tape recorder instructed Rigg to force Ivan into position to be tested. Rigg ordered Ivan to strap himself in on the bed, where Ivan's head was placed in a vise. Rigg, after reading a card that said, "Hand him the tools that will save his life.", supplied Ivan with two triggers. If Ivan activated both of them within one minute, scythe-like arms attached on either side of the vise would come down and gouge his eyes, as punishment for being a voyeur. Activating both of them would blind Ivan, but would deactivate the rest of the device. Rigg left Ivan, who only succeeded in gouging one of his eyes and failed his task. The gears holding the shackles cranked as the four posts were pulled and planted outwards, pulling his limbs out and ripping them from Ivan's body, as punishment for using his body as a tool to cause harm to the women in the photos. Upon leaving Ivan to be tested, Rigg found another card for him which read, "Become the teacher and save a life. Go back to where it all began.", leading Rigg to his next test. Agents Strahm and Perez found Ivan later, dead.
The point of this test was to make Rigg feel how Jigsaw felt when he selected his subjects, implying the rage and disgust that he felt while selecting his victims.
Rigg's first Tape:
Hello, officer Rigg. In order for you to fully understand my way, you must...FEEL WHAT I FEEL. The photo before you is of a man in desparate need of help. In the next room are the tools to his salvation. His life is in your hands but in the end, only he can save himself. Be careful. There are cameras...watching...and you must hide your identity. Make your choice.
Rigg's second Tape:
If you are playing this tape, then you are one step closer to truly understanding how to save a life. As an officer of the law, you find yourself torn. Is the man before you a victim or a perpetrator of violence? His salvation is out of your hands. It is your choice if you wish to put it into his own. Once this lesson is learned, you will find yourself one step closer to truly saving Eric Matthews. Without you, this man's game cannot begin. Force him into the position to face his demons and let him make the decision.
Ivan's Tape:
Hello, Ivan. As a voyeur, you have kept photos of those you have victimized. Can you see the pain you have brought them? You have torn apart their lives. You've used your body as an instrument of abuse. Now I give you the choice of what you decide is most important: Your eyes, which have led you blindly astray... or your body, which has caused those around you endless suffering. You have been handed the tools that will save your life. Decide quickly, though. In 60 seconds, the choice will be made for you.
[edit] Save As I Save
An abusive husband, Rex, and his wife Morgan were trapped in an abandoned classroom, where the words "SAVE AS I SAVE" were seen written on a chalkboard for Rigg. Rex and Morgan were strapped to a column with numerous rods impaled through the both of them, holding them together, next to an overhead projector sitting atop a trolley. An image of the human vascular system was projected onto a screen, showing major veins and arteries, while numerous X-rays hung from the ceiling showed broken bones inflicted from Rex. A sign scrawled on the wall, only viewable by Rex, read, "YOUR LIFE IS IN HER HANDS". To escape, Morgan had to pull the rods from herself, but a tape chained to her wrist revealed that removing the rods would cause Rex to bleed to death, as the rods were pierced through major arteries in his body, punishment for the abuse he inflicted on his wife and others, including his daughter. The rods, however, would only leave minor wounds in Morgan's body if she removed them, as none of her arteries were harmed. However, if she failed to remove them, or remained inactive, she would eventually bleed to death. She began pulling them out of her as her husband weakly attempted to stop them from exiting his wounds, but ultimately failed and bled to death through the multiple wounds. Rigg discovered the couple still hanging from the ceiling, with the timer for his tests having counted down to 33:00. One last rod remained impaled through the both of them, and Morgan began going into shock as she woke up. A tape revealed to Rigg that he had to decide whether or not to save Morgan, while also leading Rigg to find another photo of his wife. On the back of the photo, another message from Jigsaw read, "GO HOME", bearing the same font "G" as the knife from his first test and the shackle from the second test. Recalling a photo of John Kramer (Jigsaw) in front of the Gideon meat-packing plant, Rigg handed Morgan the key that would free her (the second key from his apartment meant to "save a life"). He left her to save herself by pulling the final rod out, (In the uncut version he pulls the rod out.) and he pulled a fire alarm to alert authorities to their location before leaving the school to get to the meat-packing plant. Morgan survived and claimed that Rigg saved her life.
The point of this test was to make Rigg see that he had to stand back and let each victim complete their own test, which was very important for his next test.
Later, once Agents Strahm and Perez were brought to the scene, they discovered a large harpoon gun-like device at the side of the room, that would be used to fire a haropoon into Morgan should the timer run out, or Rigg assist her from the harness (while removing the spikes was fine, Rigg helping her out with the key would kill her.). While dusting for prints, an investigator sets off the trap, spearing the photographer in side of the neck.
Rigg's Tape:
Hello, Officer Rigg. What have you learned thus far? Experience is a harsh teacher. First comes the test, second comes the lesson. If you are to SAVE AS I SAVE, then you will see the person in front of you is but a student. So I ask you, Officer Rigg: Has the pupil learned her lesson? Has she been told the error of her ways? Does she now view the world differently? Officer Rigg, the key to this person's freedom lies in the palm of your hand, but only after she has done her own part. Can you play your role in her salvation? Once judgement has been made, though, the key to finding your next destination is just off the map.
Morgan's Tape:
The human body is a facinating organism. It can withstand the most brutal injury... and yet repair itself miraculously. But you know this all too well. How many broken bones have you suffered at the hands of your husband? How many flesh wounds have you endured? With time, the bruises have healed, but your pain has not. Today, I empower you to take control of your life. Can you disconnect from the one thing that has brought you and others so much pain? With time, your wounds will heal. His, however, will not. Remove the ties that bind you...or bleed to death from your inactivity - the choice is yours...
[edit] Judge As I Judge
Art Blank, having escaped the Mausoleum trap, found and opened an envelope meant for him, and was equipped with an unexplained contraption on his back that held a pair of pincers against the back of his neck. He was missing for two weeks before he was sent to watch over Detective Eric Matthews and Forensic Hoffman at the Gideon meat-packing plant. Eric was shackled at the hands, had a brace on his broken foot, and had a chain-noose around his neck. He was standing on a slowly melting ice block that was being warmed by heat lamps. It was placed at the end of a seesaw-like scale which was in perfect balance, while Hoffman sat at the other end, strapped to a chair next to an electrode. If Eric lost his footing or enough of the ice melted, he would be hanged, and the scale would tilt toward Hoffman, dumping the runoff water onto the electrode and electrocuting him. Art was forced to monitor Rigg's progress as he went through his tests during a 90 minute period, with each of the previous victims being clients of Art. He was, however, supplied with a button that he had been instructed to push once the 90 minutes were up. This would free the three of them. However, if the door to the room was opened before time ran out, two large ice blocks (about the size of the block Eric stood on) would be triggered to swing down from the ceiling and crush Eric's head in between. As a precaution, Art gave him a revolver and one bullet with which to try and stop anyone from coming in.
Rigg arrived at the Gideon meat-packing plant and found a card that read, "Patience, remember WHO you are saving... time is on your side." As Rigg went further into the plant, he found a second card that read, "Have you learned HOW to truly save a life?". As he approached the door, Eric shot out through it but only wounded him. Rigg barged through with only 00:01 left on the timer, releasing the ice blocks and killing Eric. The runoff water poured toward Hoffman, hitting the electrode. Rigg then shot Art, who was reaching into his bag, in the head. Art dropped a tape player that revealed why Rigg had failed, stating that if he had just waited instead of charging through the door as he had been warned against, he would have saved Eric. Hoffman, having not been in any actual danger of being electrocuted, freed himself and calmly walked towards Rigg, revealing himself to be another accomplice of Jigsaw's. He then pulled the wires from the monitors and left the room, leaving Rigg bleeding on the floor.
The point of this test was to teach Rigg to remain patient, and not charge into an unsecured door, as Hoffman had previously warned him against, while also testing Rigg to see if he had learned Jigsaw's way to save a life.
Failure Tape:
Hello, Officer Rigg. If you are hearing this, then you have reached Detective Matthews and Detective Hoffman in under 90 minutes, resulting in their deaths. The rules were clear. You were warned. They had to save themselves. Their salvation was out of your hands. Time was on your side but your obsession wouldn't let you wait. Instead of saving Detective Matthews, you cost him his life. You failed your final test.
[edit] Strahm and Perez's Tests
Before her death, Detective Allison Kerry kept in contact with special agents Lindsey Perez and Peter Strahm, giving them the info she had obtained concerning the Jigsaw case. In Kerry's last message, she had informed them that two officers might be in danger, while supplying the agents with a key and another hint, "open the door and you'll find me".
Strahm and Perez joined the investigation with Detective Hoffman after the discovery of Kerry's corpse, withholding some of the info Kerry had given them from Hoffman. They were then led to believe that the two officers in danger were Lieutenant Rigg and Hoffman, after the two disappeared. Learning of Rigg's tests, the two agents arrived at Rigg's apartment, where they found Brenda's corpse, along with a message on the wall and some pictures that led them to Jill Tuck, Jigsaw's ex-wife. While questioning her on the side about her ex-husband, Perez and Strahm followed after Rigg, realizing that he was either being set-up to look like an accomplice of Jigsaw's, being recruited, or was in fact an apprentice.
After arriving at Rigg's FEEL WHAT I FEEL test, they learned that the room that Ivan had been killed in was being rented, for the past six days, by a man named Art Blank, who had been missing for two weeks. Learning of more properties owned by him, they arrived at the most recent residence owned by Art. There, the two agents found two folders, one that repeated the message they had already received, "OPEN THE DOOR AND YOU'LL FIND ME" (intended for Strahm), while the second read, "YOU ARE IN DANGER OF GETTING TOO CLOSE... STEP BACK" (a hint for Perez). After tearing a camera from the wall, Strahm deduced that he and Perez were in fact the two officers in danger.
While waiting for the address of the last of Art's owned buildings (believing it to be Jigsaw's lair or the location of Rigg's last game), Perez and Strahm arrived at the scene of Rigg's SAVE AS I SAVE test. After learning that the building they were in, an abandoned school, was in fact the last owned by Art (who shared ownership with one of his clients, Jill Tuck), Strahm and Perez checked the school office, where a Billy puppet sat in a chair surrounded by candles with a tape recorder around the puppet's neck. Perez pressed the play button and heard a message intended for her. It informed her that her partner was going to kill an innocent man (later revealed to be Jeff Reinhart), and that her "next move [was] critical," hinting that she should get out of the way. The puppet's eyes began to turn as a faint recording of Jigsaw's voice began playing, and Perez leaned forward to hear what it was saying. The puppet's face then exploded, sending shrapnel into her face and neck while letting off its mocking laugh, which began to slow down and stop from the damage done to the puppet. Perez's fate was not revealed in the fourth film, although she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. In the fifth film, Strahm is seen in her hospital room, after she has died.
Returning to question Jill further, Strahm made the realization that Rigg's final test would be at the Gideon meat packing plant after reading an article headline concerning the building, which read "Urban Renewal Group: Four Walls Build A Home"; recalling the message "FOUR WALLS BUILD A HOME" that had been written in paint at the scene of Rigg's first test, Strahm asked Jill where the Gideon plant, which John Kramer had purchased before he became Jigsaw, was located. Rushing to the meat-packing plant, he was close behind Rigg, who was about to participate in his last test. Strahm, however, took a different route that ended up following Jeff Reinhart's tests. Entering Jigsaw's latest warehouse, he opened a large steel door. Inside, he found Jeff in a frantic state after having killed both Jigsaw and Amanda. Waving a gun in the air, Jeff was shot down by Strahm. At that point, the steel door was slammed shut and locked by Hoffman, trapping Strahm inside.
Tape:
Hello, Agent Perez and welcome to the world you have long studied. Your partner Agent Strahm will soon take the life of an innocent man. Heed my warning, Agent Perez: Your next move is critical.
[edit] Hoffman's Test
A wax-coated tape in Jigsaw's stomach was found during his autopsy. At first, it was thought to be a message that taunted the authorities. As the movie progressed, it was revealed that John had a second apprentice. The second apprentice was revealed to be Hoffman when the film neared its conclusion, and the tape found in Jigsaw's stomach was meant for him. It stated that though he may be the "last man standing" (Since Jigsaw and Amanda were both dead at the time the tape was played), he would not walk away untested, that "the games have just begun", possibly hinting that the tape was a prelude to Hoffman's testing.
Tape:
Are you there, detective? If so, you are probably the last man standing. Now, perhaps you will succeed where the others have failed. You feel you now have control, don't you? You think you will walk away untested. I promise that my work will continue. That I have ensured. By hearing this tape, some will assume that this is over but I am still among you. You think it's over just because I am dead. It's not over. The games have just begun.
[edit] Saw V
The subject in Saw V was teamwork. Just like Saw II, a group of people were trapped in a structure, in this case a sewer, and had to complete each a series of traps correctly to escape. Hoffman is also trying to escape arrest while Strahm tries to find evidence against him.
[edit] The Pendulum Trap
A man named Seth, a murderer who was initially sentenced for life, was released from prison merely five years afterwards on the grounds of an undisclosed technicality. Believing Seth didn't learn the impact of his crime, Jigsaw placed him into a trap. He awoke chained to a table, with two vices on either side. Above him, was a large bladed pendulum that began to swing after the tape was completed. He had to destroy his hands with the vices in order to stop the Pendulum, as his hands were the tools that caused harm to others. In sixty seconds, the pendulum would cut him in half if he would not use the vices. Seth inserted his hands into the vices but pulls the out from not being able to bear the pain. Trying again, he crushes his hands and the Pendulum ceases for a few moments. Seth realizes that the collar around his neck was locked, and that there was no key to open it. After a short pause, the Pendulum descends further and begin cutting his abdomen, eventually slicing him in half, making the trap inescapable. It is eventually learned that Hoffman created the trap in order to avenge his sister, who was dating and subsequently murdered by Seth. He created it in the style of a Jigsaw game in order to pin the blame on John Kramer. Jigsaw eventually learned about it and blackmailed Hoffman into becoming another accomplice.
Tape:
Hello, Seth. I want to play a game. Right now, you are feeling helpless. This is the same helplessness you bestowed upon others. But now, it's unto you. Some would call it Karma. I call it justice. Now, you served five years of what should have been a life sentence for murder. A technicality gave you freedom, but it inhibited you from understanding the impact of taking a life. Today, I offer you true freedom. In thirty seconds, the pendulum will drop far enough to touch your body. Within sixty seconds, it will cut you in half. To avoid the pendulum, all you have to do is destroy the things that have killed: your hands. You must insert your hands and push the buttons to start the devices before you. Your bones will be crushed to dust. Will you destroy the things that have taken life in order to save one, Seth? Make your choice.
[edit] The Head Cube Trap
Immediately after killing Jeff, and being locked into the operating room by Hoffman, Agent Strahm located a hallway revealed by glow-in-the-dark paint. In there he discovered a cassette player that warned him to not proceed further, lest the room become his tomb. Refusing to comply, Strahm proceeded down the hallway and was then tranquilized by Hoffman.Strahm woke up with his head encased in a clear box with tubes, and his gun confiscated. The box started filling with water, eventually filling completely with the intent to drown Strahm. Quickly thinking, Strahm pulled out his pen and stabbed it into his throat, performing an emergency tracheotomy to sustain his breathing until help arrived. He ultimately survived the trap, being wheeled out by paramedics, much to Hoffman's surprise. The irony is that Strahm managed to survive a trap that was constructed with no intended means of escape.
Tape:
Hello, Agent Strahm. If you're hearing this, then you've finally found what you've been looking for. But is the discovery of my body enough? Or will your insatiable hunger to uncover the truth push you deeper into the abyss? Heed my warning: Do not proceed for this room can be your sanctuary or it can be your grave. The choice is yours.
[edit] Hoffman's Test
Shortly after Hoffman killed Seth with the Pedulum Trap, John Kramer began hunting down Hoffman. Initially encountered in an elevator, Hoffman is subsequently tranquilized and strapped to a chair. Jigsaw lectures him about how he, too, lost family by outside means and desired justice, but also said people as despicable as Seth deserved a chance to be instantly rehabilitated by the trap rather than killed. A double-barreled shotgun was pointed upwards toward Hoffman's head, with the trigger connected by string to the restraints. If Hoffman struggled against his bindings, the trigger would pull. It is then revealed that the gun only had one shell in it. Jigsaw uses his knowledge of Hoffman's murdering of Seth as a means of blackmail, in order to extort Hoffman into becoming his accomplice. Though Hoffman reluctantly assists Jigsaw at first, he eventually becomes a willing apprentice and eventually succeeds Jigsaw after his death.
Dialogue between Jigsaw and Hoffman
John: You now why you're here, don't you? They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But I find it somewhat... distasteful. To be given credit for work that's not mine. [Shows him a newspaper article regarding Seth's death] Especially inferior work. Like you, I know what it's like to lose family. And I know what it's like to not be able to protect loved ones. It's a powerless feeling. [Hoffman pulls on his chair restraints, slowly pulling on the trigger of a double-barreled shotgun aimed at his head] I wouldn't do that. [Places a mirror in front of Hoffman showing him the shotgun] Hair trigger. [Regarding Hoffman's reflection] What do you see? Vengeance can change a person. Make you into something you never thought you were capable of being. But, unlike you, I've never killed anyone. I give people a chance.
Hoffman: You call this a chance?
John: We'll see. Our game's just begun.
Hoffman: Our game? You don't even know me.
John: No. I know you. I followed you as you pursued me. I know you. I know about your sister. I know how you cared for her. I know she was your only family. You sit in bars until closing. You drink so you can sleep. You stagger to your car and then you start it all over again the next day. And I discovered what you do for recreation. You can dispense justice and give people a chance to value their lives in the same moment. And by the way: The blade on your pendulum was inferior. If you want a true edge, you have to use tempered steel. Tempering's better for the long haul. You in this for the long haul, Detective?
Hoffman: I've been a cop for 20 years. Is that long enough for you?
John: Then you and I both know the statistics for repeat offenders in this city. 67.5% of criminals are back in prison within three years.
Hoffman: What do you want from me?!
John: So you might look at what you did to Seth as a kind of public service.
Hoffman: She was my only family. He didn't deserve a chance! He was an animal!
John: EVERYBODY deserves a chance!
Hoffman: You didn't see the blood! You didn't see what HE FUCKING DID TO HER!
John: KILLING IS DISTASTEFUL!! To me. [Whispers] There is a better, more efficient, way. [Sits down and puts his finger on the tigger of the shotgun] What do you see? LOOK! What do you see?
Hoffman: Tell me what you want!
John: I want to know if you have what it takes to survive.[After a tense moment, John pulls the trigger. The gun isn't loaded]
Hoffman: Fuck you. Fuck you.
John: You see. It's a different method I'm talking about. If the subject survives my method, he or she is instantly rehabilitated. Now, you want a chance? [Hoffman nods] You want a chance? I'll give you a chance. [Stands; looks in the mirror] I am the man you call "Jigsaw." It's your duty to bring me in. I know who you are. And I know what you've done.
Hoffman: So this is blackmail?
John: No, no, no, no, no. [Kneels in front of Hoffman] This is redemption. I'm just giving you an option. That's all. Now, you can arrest me, but in doing so, your life ends as you know it. Or, you can explore the method of rehabilitation that'll permit you to sleep at night. [Cuts open Hoffman's restraints with a straight razor]
Hoffman: Or I can kill you right now.
John: But you're not a true killer. That's your dilemma. The information I have on you is exactly where I need it to be. And it will be released in the event of my disappearance.
Hoffman: They'll never believe your word over mine. [Grabs the straight razor]
John: You're willing to take that risk? The risk of ruining your own life in order to protect a corrupt legal system that puts murderers back on the streets? [Unloads the shotgun, revealing that only one barrel was loaded] How would your sister feel? We're at a crossroads, detective. Make your choice.
[edit] The Fatal Five's Tests
Five victims (Brit, Luba, Charles, Mallick and Ashley) are trapped in a sewer trying to reach the exit. Jigsaw captured them as the five were involved in a fire that killed innocent people, and their actions or inactions were a result of avarice and self-serving needs. They were subjected to four tests, all involving teamwork. Each test, and the whole series, was subjected to a time limit. When the door to each test was closed, a fifteen-minute timer would count down, and a cluster of nail bombs (similar to the bomb in Troy's trap) would go off when it expired. The doors would also seal after a time limit, so the subjects were required to be prompt, lest they all die. The tests were designed in such a way that the participants could either work together and escape with only minor injury (something that was not realized until the end), or gradually kill them one-by-one if they would not co-operate. The notion of teamwork is exemplified by the final two traps, which were designed in such a way that if for whatever reason there was only one survivor when facing either of those traps, he or she would not be able to complete the trap and would be killed by the nail bombs.
[edit] The Collar Trap
The five subjects awaken in a room with five keys in five boxes at the other end. This trap involves pulling against five cables, each one linked to a collar around each persons neck to get the keys at the end of the room to release themselves. The trick to this test was that as one person ran forward (pulling on his/her cable) the other four people would be pulled backward towards their pulleys that fed into the wall. The consequence for not completing the trap is to be decapitated. Near the pulleys for the cords are mounted razors, which will decapitate them should one go too far, or the timer run out. Mallick gets anxious and runs ahead, starting the timer. In the end, the whole group, except for Ashley, get their keys. Ashley is eventually beheaded by the blade, when the timer counts down to 0 (from 60 seconds), and the cable was pulled tight.
If they used teamwork to free themselves, they would have all survived, as only one key was needed to release the locks. They could have simply passed the key from person to person.
Tape:
Hello and welcome. From birth, you've all given the advantages of few others. Yet, through poor moral decisions, you've used these advantages to selfishly futher only yourselves at the expense of others. Well today, this singular way of thinking will be put to the test. Today, five will become one with the common goal of survival. You are all connected. A cable runs through your collar devices. It can be pulled so tight that you will be decapitated on the mounted razors. The only way to remove the collar is with the keys from the glass boxes on the pedastals before you. However, if one of you moves to retrieve the key, the 60-second timer will begin for you all. In choosing how to react to the situation, your life-long instincts will tell you to do one thing, but I implore you to do the opposite. Let the games begin.
[edit] The Jar Trap/Three Points of Safety
Brit, Mallick, Luba, and Charles proceeded into a room with numerous jars suspended in the ceiling, all of which contain keys. There were three tubes throughout the room, locked by grating, each requiring one of three special keys out of the many within the jars. The room had nail bombs inside it, and the object was to get the keys and enter the tubes, which were safe from the blast radius. Initially, the group assumed that three would reach safety and one would be left to die when the nail bombs detonated.
Charles hits Mallick with a steel bar and proceeds to smash all the hanging jars. Brit and Luba begin frantically searching for keys that match the locks on the steel bars. Mallick attempts to pick up a key but Charles steps on his hand and takes it. Just as Charles is about to enter his shelter, Luba hits Charles with a steel bar and gives the key back to Mallick. The trio enter the shelter and leave Charles to die via the explosion.
If they worked as a team, they would have realized that the tubes were large enough to accomodate more than one person, and thus everyone would have been able to survive the blast.
Tape:
Hello. And welcome to the next lesson. These walls hold three chambers. These chambers offer saftey. However, to access them, a key is needed, but only three of the keys will fit the locks. These keys are in the glass jars hanging from the ceiling. Move quickly, though. Because when the clock ticks down, the explosives in the corners of the room will detonate. With only three points of safety, which of you will be the odd man out? Make your choice.
[edit] The Bathtub Trap/Bridge The Gap
This trap had five electrical cords connected to a power source, with a bathtub in the center filled with water. In three minutes a surge of electricity would pass through the cables, and a circuit would need to be completed if the door was to open. The cables were not long enough to reach the bathtub, thus the body was meant to transmit the surge from the cord to the tub, in the process giving the person an electric shock. They had three minutes to complete the circuit, or the doors would be sealed forever, and the group would die by the nail bombs.
Luba, believing that someone's body would need to be the focal point for all five cords, began to attack Mallick with hopes to kill him. Brit fatally stabbed Luba in the neck with one of the cords, and with assistance from Mallick, hooked her up to each cord and the circuit was completed.
It is later discovered within the next trap that this bathtub test was indeed survivable for everyone, if the group used teamwork to complete the circuit. Had one person held each cord, they would only suffer a minor shock and would be able to press on.
Tape:
Hello and welcome. You must all be eager to learn the next important lesson in your transformation. The game before you is designed to bridge the gap between you all. In order to open the five locks on the door out of this room, the five electrical circuits powering them must be closed. The only way to do this is to find a way to connect all five cords to the bath water. Close the circuits, and the door will open. But you must work quickly for in three minutes, an electrical current will surge through this room, locking the door forever. Who will bridge the gap? The choice is yours.
[edit] The Blade Table
Brit and Mallick entered the final room of the series, and the final trap. There were five saws, one initially meant for each person. The subjects were meant to insert their hands into the saws and lose enough blood to fill a ten-pint beaker, which would in turn open the door and save them from the nail bombs. The two eventually realized that all five participants could have sacrificed two pints of blood with only minimal damage to their hands. Without any other option, Brit and Mallick inserted their hands into the saws, eventually losing half their bodies' amount of blood and each resulted in sawing their forearms in half. Both passed out from blood loss, with Brit only saying "we won" after Erickson arrived and discovered them. Mallick and Brit's fate is unknown.
Brit and Mallick lost five pints of blood apiece. Had the entire group worked as a team, each person would only need to lose two pints of blood, greatly increasing the chance of survival.
Tape:
Hello and welcome. This journey has been one of discovery and hopefully, you've discovered the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The human body, for instance, is an astoundingly durable creation. It contains approximately ten pints of blood. Yet it is still able to operate with just half of that. The device before you is one of sacrifice. A sacrifice of blood. In order to open the door, the beaker must be filled to the marked level. A level that is of no coincidence. This amount can come from any one of you. But that does not matter. What does matter is time. For in 15 minutes, if the beaker is not filled, the bombs will explode and the doors will be sealed forever. So now I ask you: How much blood will you give in order to survive?
[edit] Strahm's Final Test/Trust or Disbelieve
Strahm follows Hoffman to the location of the current game, and enters a room with a transparent box filled with broken glass and a recording. It urges Strahm to have trust and to get into the box. He'll be hurt, but will have a chance at life. Strahm shuts off the tape when he hears Hoffman walking in the distance. Shortly after, Hoffman walks into the room. Strahm sneaks up from behind, and after a brief struggle, he shoves Hoffman into the box and seals him in. The door to the room suddenly closes and locks itself, and Strahm demands Hoffman to tell him how to get out. Hoffman points at the tape recorder Strahm dropped on the floor, indicating for him to play the rest of the tape. Strahm does so, and the tape tells him that he will never be heard from again and that he will simply vanish, making Strahm realize that he would have lived if he had gotten into the box. As the box begins to lower into the floor, the tape adds that Jigsaw's legacy will become Strahm's, since all evidence in the Jigsaw investigation now makes him out to be Jigsaw's apprentice, and the walls of the room start to close in on him. Since his body will never be found, this will leave Hoffman free to continue "rehabilitating" people as the new Jigsaw Killer while leading the police in circles. After attempting to shoot open the box (and failing, since it's bulletproof), Strahm tries to escape through the ceiling grate, but is crushed to death by the walls as Hoffman watches with a triumphant smile. This trap was in fact drawn by the director's son, so they used it.
Original Idea: Originally, the room was supposed to fill up with water, ending the scene by drowning Stramn. But the crew realized that it would be too difficult to shoot, so they re-thought the scene and came up with the finished version.
Tape:
Hello, Agent Strahm. If you are hearing this, then you have once again found what you are looking for. Or so you think. Your dedication is to be commended. But I ask you: have you learned anything in your journey of discovery? As the old adage goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." The situation you find yourself in is one of trust. So I ask you, Special Agent Strahm, have you learned to trust me? The only way to survive this room is by entering the glass box before you. Pain will be incurred, but you will have a chance of survival. However, if you choose not to, you will never be heard from again. Your body will never be found. You will simply vanish. I ask you, Special Agent Strahm: Have you learned enough to trust me? Will you heed my warning? For if you do not, this room will forever be your tomb. And my legacy will become yours. Make your choice.
[edit] Saw VI
[edit] The Flesh Scale (Pound of Flesh)
This trap was given to test two predatory lenders (Simone and Eddie) in the opening sequence of the movie. Each victim had a device fixed to their head with screws on either side. Should one of them fail the test, the screws would drill into their skull and brain with immense pressure, killing them. In order to survive, they are forced cut off their own flesh with utensils located before them and toss said flesh onto a scale. After 60 seconds have passed, the subject that has placed the least weight onto the scale would have the device drill into their brain.
The overweight Eddie takes an early lead by slicing off and tossing his stomach fat/skin onto the scale. Simone lifts up her shirt and realizes that she doesn't have enough stomach fat to slice off and instead attempts to cut off her fingers, but has difficulty in bringing herself to do it. Meanwhile Eddie tosses another piece of skin and fat onto the scale. Simone, running out of time, begins slicing off her arm at the mid section. However, after seeing eddie toss more flesh onto the scale, Simone panics, grabs a meat cleaver and starts to hack away higher up her arm. Time begins to dwindle and each player becomes increasingly more frantic. Blood is spilled as Simone slaughters and chops off the rest of her own arm. With only seconds to spare, she grabs her severed arm and tosses it down the shoot and onto the scale, tipping the scale in her favor, and causing Eddie's trap to activate, drilling into his skull and killing him.
Tape:
Hello, I want to play a game. The devices on your heads are symbolic of the shackles that you place upon others. You recklessly loan people money, knowing their financial limitations, counting on repossessing more than they could ever pay back. You are predators, but today you become the prey and it is your own pound of flesh that I demand. The scale before you is your only path to freedom, however, only one of you may pass and the toll is the ultimate sacrifice of flesh. Before you are the instruments to exact this flesh. Move with haste though, for when the sixty second timer hits zero, whoever has given the most flesh will release their bindings while the gears on your opponent’s head will engage, piercing their skull. Who will offer the most flesh in order to save their life? The choice is yours.
[edit] William's Trials
William Easton, an executive for Umbrella Insurance (a health insurance company), who is responsible for turning down claims, has an hour to complete four tests in an abandoned zoo, or bombs strapped to his arms and legs will detonate, killing him. He's also told that if he doesn't reach the end in time, he will never see his family again. With each test he completes, he is given a key to one of his shackled bombs. As a precaution, the bombs are set to detonate even if William strays too far from an individual test. Each of his tests involve individuals who have close ties to him and the health insurance company, mainly his subordinates. In William's games, he is challenged to put his health insurance policy (which ultimately favors younger, healthier people) to the test.
Tape:
Hello, William. You’ve probably been wondering when we would see each other again. Today is that day. For years your probability formula has decided the fate of others. The healthy have benefited while the potentially sick have been unjustly rejected. However, this formula does not take into account the human will to live. When faced with death, who should live versus who will live are two entirely separate things. Today your policy will be put to the test. There are four straps around your limbs and you have four tests you must complete, for if you don’t, the straps on your arms and legs will detonate. Look closely. You have sixty minutes to complete your tests and avoid this fate, starting now. You are not alone in this game. Just as you have taken loved ones away from their families, if you do not reach the end before the timer hits zero, you will never see your family again...
[edit] The Oxygen Clamps
William and the company's janitor, Hank, awaken and find that they are each fastened in between two large vices, facing one another with their arms chained above their heads and oxygen masks over their faces. The rules explain that every time one of them breathes, a device will react and the vices will tighten on the individual who is breathing. Both attempt to outlast eachother and hold their breath for longer periods of time, however, the janitor, who happens to be a smoker, cannot hold his breath for long and soon after has his ribcage crushed, setting William free.
Tape:
...Here is your first test. Your health and hereditary background put you in the highest category of success, however the same cannot be said for your adversary. While only fifty-two years of age, this man has continued to smoke, even though he has a history of high blood pressure and heart disease. This demonstrates the very lack of appreciation for the blessings of his own life. Your game will focus on the simple element of air. Once this game begins, every time you take a breath, the clamps around your chest will close in and crush your body. The only escape is in the other’s failure. So I ask you: When faced with death, who will survive? Live or die, William. Make your choice.
[edit] The Barbed Wire Noose Trap
In William's second test, he reaches a dimly lit reptile room with two small screens on the railing flashing '"Take" and "Them", (referring to two chains with handles connected to the railing) and a large window in front of him. Originally William refuses to take the chains, but when he attempts to continue through the room, the bomb on his wrist begins to blink, forcing William to go back and pick up both chains. Each chain is revealed to be connected to a narrow platform behind the window. On one platform is a young file clerk, Allan, and on the other, William's elderly secretary, Addy. Each person has a barbed wire noose around their neck and they are both gagged. To move on, William must release one chain, causing the corresponding person's platform to retract and hang them. William refuses to let go of either chain however the chains begin to slowly withdraw, causing William to lose his grip and when he can barely hold onto them any longer, he is forced to make a choice. The instructions for the test point out that by his company's standards, the secretary is too old to be worth saving, however since she has a family, William chooses to let the file clerk die instead. His platform retracts, and the noose severs his artery. Allan is hanged as his blood splatters all over the window and his lifeless body swings.
Tape:
Hello, William. Standing on the platforms behind me are two of your colleagues. One: your file clerk; a young healthy male with no living relatives. The other: an aged woman, with a family history of diabetes. According to your policy, your secretary is older and weaker, and therefore less worthy to survive; but you know the loss that she will be to her family? While young Allan will disappear without a blip on the world’s radar. Only one can exit this room and the choice of whom falls upon you. You must let go of one to save the life of the other. As you can see, the choice is not so clear when you are face to face with the people who’s blood will stain your hands. Let the game begin.
[edit] The Steam Room
The third test takes place in the boiler room of the abandoned zoo. As William enters the boiler room, confronted by yet another Jigsaw tape, he notices that his company's attorney, Debbie, is also present. Jigsaw informs William that Debbie has 90 seconds to find her way out of the caged maze beneath him and at the end of the maze she must acquire a key to remove the device strapped to her body. Should she fail and the timer reach zero, a metal rod would impale her through her brain. Debbie's shackles are released at the start of the timer. Debbie begins to crawl through the caged maze, but is halted by the hot steam shooting from either side of the cage. William finds a lever for the steam valves, and pulls it, diverting the jets of steam away from Debbie's path and onto his body, screaming in pain as the steam scalds his arm. Debbie eventually reaches the end of the maze with a few burns and learns from a series of x-ray films that the key to her device has been implanted in the side of William's torso. With the 90 seconds nearly up, Debbie grabs a circular saw and begins to attack William to saw out the key she desperately needs to escape. Avoiding Debbie's wild attacks, William punches her in the face a few times, causing Debbie to stumble back and notice that the 90 seconds has expired. The rectangular device clicks into position, and shoots a sharp metal pipe up through Debbie's head, piercing her brain. William then watches as her lifeless corpse falls down three levels. Noticing another arrow on the wall, William reluctantly follows it and finds another key held up by a piece of string. He grabs it and continues on his way, unlocking another strap from his body.
Tape:
Hello, William. You have seen the flaws in your policy, but what you have not seen is the extent some people will go to when faced with death. The lawyer from your firm has ninety seconds to cross this room or the device attached to her chest will discharge and pierce her brain. She will find that the journey across this room is filled with danger. In order for her to make it, you will need to be there for her and it is you who ultimately holds the key to her survival. When faced with death, will she have the skills to live? Let the game begin.
[edit] The Carousel Trap
The fourth test, The Carousel Trap, was revealed in a teaser clip to promote Saw VI. The trap consists of 6 people on a roundabout-like object inside of a large metal cage. At the front of the cage is a large metal device attached to a shotgun which is pointing at the carousel. The carousel slows to a halt with a random victim facing the gun. The character of William in the scene must choose to place his hand inside a metal box and press a button, causing a metal rod to pierce his hand in order to prevent the selected victim from being shot, or choose not to and let the victim be shot point-blank in the chest by the gun, thus killing the person that's in it's path. In the end, William chooses to save the second and fifth person to be stopped by the carousel.
Tape:
Hello, William. Before you are six of your most valuable associates, the ones who find errors in policies. Their findings result in over two-thirds of all applications denied or prematurely terminated. Now you must apply your analysis to them, and will you be able to find their errors? Six ride the carousel, but only two can get off. The decision of which two survive falls upon you. But remember, the mounted gun will continue to fire until all six rounds are spent. And if no decision is made on your part, all six will perish. To offer the two reprieves, you must press both buttons at once in the box before you, however in doing so, you will give a sacrifice of your own. Two can live, four will die. Your decisions symbolized by the blood on your hands.
[edit] William's Final Test
In the last room, William finds two cages. One contains his sister, Pamela (also a well-known reporter of the Jigsaw cases). In the other cage are Tara and Brent, the wife and son of a man who died after having his coverage rejected. Each cage has a large tank of hydrofluoric acid. In the cage belonging to Tara and Brent is a switch labelled "Live" and "Die", giving them the final choice of whether or not William survives. Tara has been given the power over whether William lives or dies, however she cannot bring herself to kill him. Brent on the other hand is full of bitterness and hatred towards the man that stands before him, who let his father die and pulls the switch causing a series of needles to swing down piercing into William's back and injecting him with both tanks of Hydrofluoric acid. The acid is highly corrosive as it flows through his body, melting it, and killing him in front of Pamela, Tara and Brent.
Tara's Tape:
Hello Tara. My apologies for exposing you and your son to this kind of treatment, but i can assure you that it is not without reason. The man before you just made the sacrifices to save the life of a loved one. However, when given the opportunity to save your husband's life, he chose not to. Now you will be given the power to save a life. Will you grant this man the opportunity to continue living? Or will you dispense the same death sentence he issued your husband? Live or Die. The choice is yours.
Pamela's Tape:
Hello Pamela. You've sensationalized my life, twisting the truth and exploiting my message for your own benefit... Well today you will experience the meaning of sacrifice and you will see the consequence for those who unjustly hurt others.
[edit] The Reverse Beartrap 2.0
Towards the end of the movie, Jill is shown putting Hoffman into what appears to be a newly-made, updated Reverse Beartrap. As she leaves the room after strapping Hoffman's wrists to the chair he is sitting in, Hoffman quickly uses the trap as a hammer to break the bones in his hand, freeing himself from his restraints. He then finds a screwdriver and attempts to pry the device off of his head without success. Ultimately, he breaks the glass in the small window in the door to the room and jams the trap in between the window's bars, preventing it from fully opening. Hoffman is finally able to remove the trap, though the right side of his mouth is torn apart.
Compared to the original reverse bear trap, this version has a much sleeker design, as well a digital timer instead of an analog one.
[edit] Saw: The Game
Saw: The Game features many traps from the Saw films including Reverse Bear Traps, Venus Deathmasks, Shotgun Collars, and others, while also introducing brand new traps. Many of the central (Chapter) trap ideas in the game involve borrowed or similar ideas from the film series. The game specifically focuses around Tapp's tests and each Chapter concludes with a trap involving another victim who Tapp is required to save.
[edit] Tapp's Trials/The Asylum Traps
Similar to the Nerve Gas House in the second film and Jeff's Trials in the third, Tapp's Asylum Test is the location of an ongoing game involving multiple victims, puzzles, and traps, meant to test Detective Tapp. As Tapp traverses the abandoned Asylum, he finds that his fellow cellmates are hostile towards him and attempt to murder him on various occasions. Tapp discovers that the reason the other victims have turned against him is that Jigsaw, while treating his gunshot wound (from the original Saw movie), placed a key somewhere inside of his body and the key is the only thing that can free the other victims from their own traps (some of these traps are more obvious than others). Tapp's game is meant to test how far he will go in his obsession to find and stop Jigsaw and show Tapp how his obsession has hurt others. Most of Tapp's tests involve saving other victims throughout the Asylum.
Tapp's first tape:
Hello Detective Tapp. I want to play a game. Your obsession with catching me has robbed you of your life and the lives of others. You abuse every resource available to you in your quest to find the truth. You have lost your family, your badge, even the life of your partner, Detective Sing. You have lost you health, whittled away by the bullet wound in your chest. But you have not given up, have you? Now we will see if you can overcome your obsession. No doubt you remember the device attached to your head. It is evidence left over from your investigation. Here's what happens if you lose. Free yourself from the device and pursue me, or sit there and let it tear you apart. The choice is yours.
[edit] The Detox Chair
Tapp arrives at his first test to find Amanda Young strapped to a chair with two needles injecting a red liquid into her wrists. Tapp is instructed to sit in the chair next to her and allow himself to be injected with a blue liquid. Each individual has a poison acting throughout their bodies and it is up to Tapp to ensure that the correct antidotes are mixed using the machine in between the two and also to make sure that neither person flatlines. Tapp succeeds, but unbeknownst to him, Amanda has been working alongside Jigsaw and allows herself to be abducted before allowing Tapp to continue through the Asylum. Amanda was supposedly placed in this trap because she did not learn from her first test, however it is revealed that she was simply there to test Tapp.
Tape:
Hello Amanda, you remember me. I want to play a game. You told our friend, the detective, that I saved you, but you forgot your lesson. You damaged your body with drugs and pain. Now the needle will save your life. Each of you will be injected with poisons that will slowly break down your bodies. The device in front of you contains the antidote to each of the poisons. The red vials go to the left, and the blue vials go to the right, but be careful. Incorrectly mixing the antidotes will cause some... discomfort. The last time we played, you freed youself by taking a life. Now your only salvation is to put your trust in someone else. Live or die, Amanda.
[edit] The Pendulum Trap (Game)
This trap resembles the Pendulum trap featured in Saw V, with minor differences, one being that it is hung vertical to the victim's body instead of horizontally. In this trap, Tapp must connect rotating gears before the time limit expires in order to free Jennings Foster.
Tape:
Hello Jennings. While intoxicated, you hit and killed a homeless man with your car. As a forensic scientist, you knew just what to clean, but you couldn't clean the guilt from your soul, could you? You even put an innocent man in jail for your crime, all to preserve your perfect life, but you couldn't stop the guilt from eating away at you, rotting you from the inside. Unless the officer you involved in your crime can hold the blade, we will see what you really have inside.
[edit] The Iron Maiden
This trap involves Melissa Sing, (Detective Sing's widow) standing on what looks like a large-scale, untriggered bear trap. Melissa's legs are strapped to a platform in between two large boards lined with buzzsaws. Detective Tapp must move steel blocks within glass cubes to a saw symbol in order to free her. If Tapp were to fail and cross too many strike marks, the magnets holding the boards would short out and they would snap shut on her in a similar manner to that of an iron maiden.
Tape:
Hello Melissa, its time to wake up and see what your life has become. You understood the risks of marrying an officer of the law. When he was killed, you let your vengeance for detective Tapp consume you. Your life crumbled and you neglected your son. I now offer you a gift a chance to break through the numbness and taste the life you buried with your husband. Will you forgive detective Tapp, or is your hate too great to be satiated? You are in what might be called an Iron Maiden. Move the metal cubes to the symbol and avoid the strikes. After six strikes the device will snap shut, and this place will be your tomb.
[edit] The Backbreaker
This trap is created for Oswald McGuilicutty, a reporter of the jigsaw cases. The table Oswald is strapped to is intended to bend his arms backwards, snapping them, followed by his back. The only way for Oswald to escape is if Tapp manages to connect three circuits in three electrical boxes. Tapp completes this task and frees Oswald, however, Oswald runs directly into another trap triggered by a tripwire, crushing him between two large metal plates.
Tape:
Hello, Oswald. Your newspaper has been the primary source of information about my message; why I do what I do. But your motivations are selfish. You spread my message, but pervert it for your own personal glory. You twisted your words to implicate Detective Tapp, to make the public suspect him to be me. the device you are strapped to will twist until your body is broken. To stop the device you must complete the electrical circuit panel. If you do not complete the circuit in time, words will not be able to describe your agony.
[edit] The Furnace Trap (Game)
Obi Tate's trap involves a large furnace, similar in concept to Obi's test in Saw II, that will continue to increase in temperature, until Obi is burned alive. Tapp must rotate small, circular levels of pipes so that they connect to each other on both sides in order to save Obi's life.
Tape:
Hello Obi, you have isolated yourself from society, creating a life so empty that you have come to me for your test. For a reason to live, you wish to become like me, but the only way to give others a chance to live life is to understand why it is so precious. The room you are in is attached to a large furnace. Detective Tapp is your only hope of redemption. If he fails, the temperature will increase, and the liquid within your body will boil you alive. Time is short.
[edit] The Memory Spike/ The Impaler
Jeff, the individual who was placed in the drill chair from the original Saw movie, is strapped to a wall with large metal spikes resting behind it. Tapp must play a matching game involving different symbols to release Jeff, but for every mistake Tapp makes, a spike from behind the wall will pierce through Jeff's body. But, for every correct pair, a spike will retract. Should Tapp fail and match enough symbols incorrectly, Jeff will be skewered to death by the spikes.
Tape:
Hello Jeff. Day after day you live alone, isolating yourself, to avoid the stress of reality. You have tried to take your own life on multiple occasions because you cannot endure the mental pain of everyday life. Now, you will have to endure real pain. The game is simple: Detective Tapp must match all of the corresponding symbols and you will be released; match the wrong symbols, and a metal spike will pierce your body; match too many wrong symbols, and your suffering will end.
[edit] Tapp's Final Test
At the end of the game, Tapp is presented with two doors with which to walk through: Freedom and Truth. To be able to choose a door at all, he must first run through a brutal gauntlet filled with traps and other hazards in order to retrieve a key to the doors.
Should Tapp choose the Freedom door, he chooses to accept Jigsaw's advice and let go of his obsession, which permits him to leave the Asylum without ever seeing or hearing from Jigsaw again, but he will also never have another opportunity to capture him. If the player chooses this door, Tapp goes home, but unable to overcome his obsession and burdened by the lives he ruined as a result of it, he becomes angry and depressed because he relinquished his only opportunity to find the man he held responsible for so many deaths. Being unable to cope with his guilt, Tapp uses a revolver to take his own life. According to James Wan and Leigh Whannell, this is the ending that is considered canonical within the Saw universe.
If Tapp chooses the Truth door, he is promised an opportunity to seek the truth behind his obsession, and it is implied that he will come face to face with Jigsaw himself. Indeed, upon entering the door, he sees a figure wearing Jigsaw's red-lined cloak, and gives chase. Tapp catches up to the figure in the courtyard, and beats the figure relentlessly, before unmasking it and realizing that it is in fact Melissa Sing. Upon playing her tape, Tapp discovers that because Melissa has offered to forgive Tapp for the death of her husband, Jigsaw is putting her through another test that will lead her to her kidnapped son. As part of the test, her mouth was sewn shut, she was given Jigsaw's robe, and was told to help Tapp stay alive and follow the rules until the end of his game. Horrified by his actions, he lets Melissa go, where she is promptly killed by the same Quadruple Shotgun trap that killed her husband. The fate of her son remains unknown. Tapp, as a result of the events leading to this point, suffers a mental breakdown and is placed in a mental facility, where he is constantly plagued by visions of his asylum ordeal.
