The Suspended Cage is a trap from the Saw franchise, appearing in Saw 3D.

Design and Function[]

This trap was the first trap in Bobby's Trial. The victim was trapped in a large cylindrical metal cage, which seconds later would be suspended by a pulley system several feet above the floor. Below the cage were two adjoined metal platforms with several large spikes attached to them. To escape the cage, the victim had to pull a lever hanging from the ceiling. Thereby, the bottom of the cage would fall off. To avoid falling down and being impaled by the spikes, the victim had to swing back and forth and jump off to safety. (Saw 3D)

History[]

Bobby Dagen's Test[]

Hello Bobby. I want to play a game. You have amassed wealth, fame, and notoriety based upon your story of survival. Many have aided in your cause, but few know the truth. You are a liar. You and I both know you have never been in a trap nor have you ever been tested. Today, these lies will come full circle and you will learn if you truly have what it takes to call yourself a survivor. The cage you find yourself in will symbolize your rebirth. Within the next sixty minutes, you must stay upon the path of learning and traverse a series of obstacles to obtain access to your wife, who you have also deceived. If you fail to reach her before the clock runs out, she will die. Live or die, Bobby? Make your choice.
— Bobby Dagen's tape[src]

The person tested in this trap was Bobby Dagen, a man who had gained wealth and fame by publishing his book "S.U.R.V.I.V.E. - My Story of Overcoming Jigsaw", in which he told his readers how he supposedly survived a deadly trap set up by the Jigsaw Killer and how his life developed afterwards. In fact however, he had never been tested by the killer and his whole story was nothing but a lie, which ultimately led him to become a target of John Kramer, the real Jigsaw Killer. After the latter's death, Bobby was subdued and abducted by Detective Mark Hoffman, Jigsaw's successor, who took him to the abandoned Clear Dawn Psychiatric Hospital, where he had prepared a deadly game for him.

Shortly afterwards, Bobby awoke in a dark finding himself trapped in a large cylindrical metal cage. Immediately afraid of his situation, he screamed for help. In an attempt to free himself from the cage, he repeatedly tried to kick off the bottom of the cage when suddenly a TV turned on in front of him, showing a mechanical ventriloquist puppet. The puppet introduced Bobby to his game and confronted him with the fact that all of his stories about surviving a trap had been nothing but lies. At the next moment, the TV showed Joyce, who was trapped with a chain around her neck at an unknown location. Distressed and in fear, Bobby begged Jigsaw for mercy. However only seconds later, a 60-minute-timer was activated and began counting down. The puppet told Bobby that he'd have to face a series of tests in order to gain access to his wife, who he had lied to as well. If he failed to complete his game in time - she would die.

Bobby clings onto the bars

As the tape ended, the lights around Bobby were turned on, the cage moving up right and suspending several feet above the floor by a pulley system. This prompted two grated platforms with several large spikes attached to them to release down onto the floor beneath the cage. Frantic to escape, Bobby pulled the lever hanging from the ceiling, causing the bottom of the cage to fall off, nearly dropping him to his demise. However he managed to hold onto the bars of the cage. Understanding what he needed to do to survive, he began swinging back and forth until he was able to jump from the cage and land on the floor beyond the spikes to safety. Thereby, he noticed another TV, showing his wife screaming for help in her trap. Bobby quickly picked himself up and tried to open the front door. However, as it had been secured by a chain, he had no other choice but to move forward on the path his abductor had planned for him. Upon looking around, he saw the words "Start your life anew" written on the steps of a staircase in red letters. The steps led up to a door, which had the words "Understand your problems" written on it. Realizing that this was the right path, Bobby went through the door, thereby recognizing the written messages as the headlines of the chapters of his book.

The police enters the building

Within the next hour, the hospital was found by Officer Matt Gibson, who entered the building along with a SWAT team. When they broke through the front door and secured the big entrance hall, they found the suspended cage and the spikes. Gibson noticed a TV, which showed Joyce Dagen in her trap, as well as a timer, thereby realizing that the game was still going on. The officers made their way through the building in an attempt to find Bobby and end his game.
