Donnie leaves the clinic

Donnie Greco was an average man, until he started to suffer from an addiction to drugs. Due to that, he eventaully became a patient at the Homeward Bound Clinic, a recovery clinic for drug addicts ran by Jill Tuck. He, along with Paul Leahy, was one of her last patients at the night when Jill lost her unborn son, Gideon, during her seventh month of pregnancy. Due to his addiction, he was targeted by John Kramer, better known to the public as the Jigsaw Killer, who was actually Jill's ex-husband. (Saw, IV)

Jigsaw prepares Donnie

Some time later, Donnie was abducted and taken to an abandoned building, where he became a part of one of Jigsaw's deadly games, along Amanda Young, who was a patient of the recovery clinic as well. Due to an opiate overdose, he wasn't able to move or feel anything. When Jigsaw prepared Amanda's game, he made Donnie swallow a key and painted a black question mark on his stomach. After finishing all of his preparations, John left the building. (Saw, III)

Amanda finally woke up and found herself strapped to a chair with a metallic device placed on her head. She immediately panicked and tried to free herself from the chair, but stopped when a TV turned on next to her. A mechanical ventriloquist puppet appeared on the screen and told her that the device on her head was hooked into her upper and lower jaw and would rip her head apart if she didn't manage to free herself within 60 seconds. It also revealed that the only key to unlock the trap was in the stomach of her supposedly dead cellmate, Donnie.

Amanda finds the mark

When the TV turned off, Amanda panicked again. However, the timer of the trap just started to count down when she freed herself from her restraints and stood up from the chair, which caused a metal pin to be pulled out of the trap, resulting in its activation. When she saw the lifeless body of her cellmate, she recognized him as another patient from the clinic. She initially hesitated to cut open the body. However, when she realized that Donnie wasn't dead but merely paralysed, she grabbed a knife lying next to him and stabbed him multiple times until he died, as he was unable to defend himself. After his death, Amanda desperately searched his entrails and finally obtained the key, allowing her to free herself from the vicious device. (Saw)

Post-Mortem

After Amanda had managed to free herself and escaped from the building, the Metropolitan Police Department soon found Donnie's corpse. He was taken to the morgue, where Dr. Adam Heffner performed the autopsy on his body. Thereby, he found out about the opiate overdose that had paralyzed Donnie. (Saw, VI)

Non-Canon Appearances

Saw: The Video Game

Donnie was briefly referenced in the Saw: The Video Game. After Jigsaw had abducted Amanda for another game, he reminded her of how she had to take a life the last time she was tested and told her that she would need the help of someone else this time around.

Saw II: Flesh & Blood

Donnie was also mentioned in Saw II: Flesh & Blood throughout several case files and audio tapes recorded by Detective David Tapp. According to those, Donnie's corpse had disappeared when the police arrived at the crime scene. His identity was only revealed during the forensic examination of his blood.

Personality

Not much can be said about Donnie's personality due to his short screen time.

Trivia

  • In the original script for Saw, Donnie was Amanda's drug dealer.
  • While separation of men and women is the usual procedure in American prisons, it is still possible, albeit unlikely, that Amanda and Donnie we're once incarcerated in the same penitentiary as John's puppet referred to him as Amanda's "cellmate."
