The Detox Chair is a trap from the Saw franchise, appearing in Saw: The Video Game.

Design and Function

This trap consisted of three parts. The first one was a medical chair, with elongated off-standing legrests. The arms and legs of the first victim were shackled to their respective rests by several metallic shackles. Once the game began, two syringes, which were attached to the ends of the armrests, injected the victim with a deadly poison. To survive, the test subject had to rely on the help of a second person. This person had to sit down on a mechanical seat next to the first victim. After doing so, a gear system was activated and caused two syringes to inject a different poison in the second person's neck. In the middle of the victims was another large machine, which processed colored vials of the different antidotes. The second victim had to make sure that each vial of the antidote had to be processed to the right chair: the red vials would cure the first victim while the blue vials would save the other one. If the second victim made too many mistakes, the administration of the wrong antidote would first increase the symptoms of the poison and eventually kill both of them. (Saw: The Video Game)

History

David Tapp's Test

The persons tested in this trap were David Tapp, a detective obsessed with apprehending John Kramer, better known as the Jigsaw Killer, and Amanda Young, a former drug addict and the first survivor of one of Jigsaw's games, who had been chosen for this second test as she had developed self-harming tendencies. When Amanda woke up in her trap at the abandoned Whitehurst Insane Asylum, she was greeted by Jigsaw and therefore immediately panicked. Jigsaw confronted her with her acts of self-harm by cutting herself and therefore was convinced that she hadn't learned anything from her last test. She tried to convince him otherwise and told him to let her go. However, he told her that Detective Tapp, who was trapped at the asylum as well, would soon come to save her. Meanwhile, Tapp was able to observe their conversations over several monitors placed all around the asylum.

Hello, Amanda. You remember me. I want to play a game. You told our friend, the detective, that I saved you, but you forgot your lesson. You damaged your body with drugs and pain. Now the needle will save your life. Each of you will be injected with poisons that will slowly break down your bodies. The device in front of you contains the antidote to each of the poisons. The red vials go to the left and the blue vials go to the right, but be careful. Incorrectly mixing the antidotes will cause some discomfort. The last time we played, you freed yourself by taking a life. Now your only salvation is to put your trust in someone else. Live or die, Amanda.
— Amanda Young's tape[src]

When Tapp finally reached the operating theatre where Amanda was trapped, she frantically begged him to free her from the chair. Moments later, a TV turned on in front of them. Jigsaw's mechanical ventriloquist puppet appeared on the screen and once more confronted Amanda with her drug addiction and her acts of self-harm. Thereby, he also told her that only Detective Tapp could save her from her trap. Meanwhile, her arms were injected with poison

Amanda argues with Tapp

When the tape ended and the TV turned off again, Tapp sat down on the second chair and was injected with poison on his own by two needles which pierced his neck. While Amanda further panicked, Tapp tried to administer all the colored vials to the correct side. Eventually, he managed to cure himself and Amanda from the poisons and both of them were released from their chairs. As Amanda was still agitated, Tapp tried to calm her down. However, when she told her that she had seen Jigsaw and he asked her who he was and what he looked like, Amanda got angry as Tapp was more interested in Jigsaw rather than the fact that she had almost been killed by the trap. Furthermore, she blamed him for having been tested again. Nonetheless, the two of them went on and continued their way together. (Saw: The Video Game)
