After studying one of the tapes left by John Kramer (dubbed the "Jigsaw Killer," or simply Jigsaw, by the media) for one of his victims, David found a clue as to the whereabouts of his hideout, and he and Steven rush over there during the middle of the night to arrest him. However, when they got there, they found Jeff Ridenhour in an experimental trap with two drill bits aimed to kill him. John arrived and was confronted by David, who was armed with a shotgun at the time. In an effort to escape, John activated the trap and made a run for it, but not before slashing David's throat with a wrist blade. Steven managed to stop the drills from killing Jeff, and pursued John throughout the warehouse before being killed by a barrage of shotguns aimed down on him.
David survived the neck slash, but was discharged from the police force after becoming obsessed with the case. He hired Adam Faulkner to take pictures of Lawrence Gordon, a past suspect that David believed to be the Jigsaw Killer. David eventually noticed Zep Hindle waiting in Lawrence's house, and, when he noticed gun shots, he rushed over and confronted Zep, saving Alison and Diana Gordon, Lawrence's wife and daughter, before chasing Zep into the sewers. Zep ended up shooting David in the chest, wounding him.

David is a playable character in the new Saw game. The game takes place between the events of Saw and Saw II. It revealed that Tapp survived his gunshot wound. Shortly after the events of Saw 1, Jigsaw takes Tapp to an abandoned asylum. Well, not actually abandoned, it is full of people playing their own games and Jigsaw's minions are there. Tapp awakens with the reverse bear trap bound to his face. After Jigsaw gives him instructions to come and pursue him. Tapp gets the bear trap off his head before it goes off, and makes his way through the asylum.

David was given a memorial, along with Officer Daniel Rigg and Detectives Eric Matthews, Allison Kerry, and his old partner, Steven.
