The Bathroom Trap was the main game of the first film, and involved two players, Adam Stanheight and his opponent, Dr. Lawrence Gordon. Both men were chained at the ankle to pipes at opposite ends of a dilapidated, industrial bathroom. Between them laid what appeared to be a dead man, holding a tape player in one hand, and a gun in the other. Both men found tapes in their pockets, which gave each of them instructions on how to win. Lawrence had to kill Adam before 6AM; if he failed, his wife and daughter would be killed, and he would be left to rot in the bathroom. Adam, on the other hand, had to escape before 6AM, or risk suffering the same fate. Using a hidden message from one of the tapes, Adam found hacksaws hidden in the toilet. Jigsaw intended for both men to saw their feet off, as Lawrence would need to do so in order to reach the gun, and Adam would need to saw his foot off to escape before Lawrence could kill him.
They ultimately fail to complete their tasks by the deadline. However, out of desperation, Lawrence saws his foot off, and shoots Adam with the gun after 6AM. While he crawls out of the bathroom, he discovers a hot steaming pipe in the hallway, which he uses to cauterize his wound, making him the victor. Adam, who survived the gunshot, is left to rot in the bathroom by Jigsaw, who was posing as the dead man on the floor the whole time. Jigsaw, while exiting, reveals that the key to the chain was hidden in the bathtub, which was lost down the drain when Adam accidentally pulled the stopper when he awakened in the bathroom.
Paul Leahy woke up almost completely naked in a fenced-in area within a basement. Between him and the door was a gauntlet of densely strung together razor wire, which a tape informed him that he had to navigate through in order to find an exit. Hidden somewhere in the fencing was a hole, which would have served as a way out of the maze, but the hole was located in a spot where the victim was not likely to look. The door leading out of the basement was set to close and lock on a timer, and the victim was required to escape before the timer went off.
Tape: "Hello, Paul. You're a perfectly healthy, sane, middle-class male. Yet last month, you ran a straight razor across your wrists. Did you cut yourself because you truly wanted to die, or did you just want some attention? Tonight you'll show me. The irony is that if you want to die, you just have to stay where you are. But if you want to live, you'll have to cut yourself again. Find the path through the razor wire to the door. But hurry – at 3:00 that door will lock and then this room becomes your tomb. How much blood will you shed to stay alive, Paul?"
Mark Wilson was stripped nude and placed in a dark cellar with broken glass covering the floor. A tape informed him that there was a slow acting poison coursing through his bloodstream and that the antidote was locked in a safe, the combination to which was amongst thousands of numbers scrawled on to the walls. Mark's body was also smeared in a flammable substance, and he only had a lit candle for light. Mark was eventually burned alive when he fumbled with the candle.
Tape: "Hello, Mark. If you're so sick, then why do I have so many photos of you up and about? Let's put your so called "illness" to the test. Right now, there's a slow acting poison in your veins. The antidote is inside the safe. The combination to the safe is written on the wall. Hurry up and program it in, but watch your step. And by the way, that's a flammable substance smeared on your body. So I would be careful with that candle if I were you, or all the people you've burned with your act just might have their revenge."
Amanda Young woke up strapped to a chair, in a dimly lit room, with a large metal device locked into her mouth. A video tape showing Billy the Puppet, and a voice-over of Jigsaw, explained that the device on her head was hooked into her upper and lower jaw. When activated, she would have sixty seconds to unlock it. If she failed to do so, it would rip her jaw apart, killing her instantly. The key needed to remove the device was in the stomach of Amanda's drug dealer, Donnie Greco, who was lying across the room, paralyzed due to an opiate overdose. When Amanda escaped her restraints, she inadvertently activated the timer. She went over to Donnie, realizing he was actually alive, just heavily tranquilized. With no other options, Amanda took a scalpel next to Donnie and cut through his stomach, killing him in the process. She then retrieved the key and freed herself from the trap with one second to spare. After this, Billy rides out on his tricycle, and congratulates her on her survival.
Tape: "Hello, Amanda. You don't know me but I know you. I want to play a game. Here's what happens if you lose. The device you're wearing is hooked into your upper and lower jaws. When the timer back goes off, your mouth will be permanently ripped open. Think of it like a reverse bear trap. Here, I'll show you. There's only one key to open the device, it's in the stomach of your dead cellmate. Look around, Amanda. Know that I'm not lying. You better hurry up. Live or die. Make your choice." It is easily the most well-known trap in the Saw Series.
When Detective Sing and Detective Tapp find Jigsaw's lair, they find that there is a victim, Jeff Ridenhour, in another one of Jigsaw's traps. This trap involved two power drills attached to the sides of a chair. Over time, the drills would move closer to the victim's neck, which was held steady by a metal neck brace. The trap was activated after Jigsaw stepped on a button to distract the detectives from arresting him. Sing orders Jigsaw to release Jeff, only for him to say that a key is needed to stop the trap. Sing didn't know which key was needed to unlock the neck brace, so he shot the trap repetitively until the drills were shot off, saving Jeff's life.
Jigsaw's words to Jeff: "Awake already, Jeff? I need more powerful tranquilizers next time. Don't cry, I've given your life a purpose. You are a test subject for something greater than yourself."Zep Hindle, a hospital orderly, to become involved in a game of his own. Zep had to monitor the two men in the Bathroom Trap to ensure that Dr. Gordon killed Adam Stanheight. If Gordon failed, Zep would have to kill Gordon's wife and daughter to gain an antidote to a poison administered to him by Jigsaw. After Gordon failed to kill Adam within the time limit, Zep attempted to murder the mother and child, but the two managed to escape. Making his way down to the location of the Bathroom Trap, he then attempted to kill Gordon, but was instead bludgeoned to death with a toilet lid by Adam.
Tape: "Hello, Mr. Hindle. Or as they called you around the hospital: Zep. I want you to make a choice. There's a slow-acting poison coursing through your system, which only I have the antidote for. Will you murder a mother and her child to save yourself? Listen carefully, if you will; there are rules..."
